Christopher Nolan\u2019s The Odyssey<\/a> is shaping up to be the biggest movie of the summer, but it\u2019s not expected to be much of a menswear movie. Fair enough. Nothing against gladiator sandals, leather skirts, and Marvin the Martian helmets, but their utility in a contemporary wardrobe is minimal at best. In spite of this (or maybe because of it), the cast has been on a serious red-carpet heater in recent weeks, sporting a series of immaculate looks<\/a> that are to modern tailoring what their Odyssey costumes are to sword-and-sandal cosplay.<\/p>\n

At last night\u2019s New York premiere, for example, Tom Holland<\/a> and Matt Damon<\/a> absolutely nailed two distinct takes on age-appropriate suiting, creating a template for dressing with gravitas and style at any age.<\/p>\n

Damon, who is 55 (and has the salt-and-pepper beard to prove it), showed up decked out in head-to-toe Ralph Lauren Purple Label<\/a>. Lauren\u2019s top-tier tailoring line, which combines classical European silhouettes with top-shelf materials, has been a red-carpet go-to for decades, but\u2014as with any tailored look\u2014the way Damon wore his navy blue suit was far more consequential than the name on the label. The fit was impeccable, with a golden ratio of lapel-to-collar-to-tie proportions polished off with a jaunty pair of brown monkstraps and a white pocket square. It\u2019s a look that doesn\u2019t try to reinvent anything, which is exactly as it should be for a dad in his mid-50s who\u2019s comfortable in his skin and confident about his place in the world.<\/p>\n
