{"id":590236,"date":"2026-07-17T10:30:28","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T10:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/590236\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T10:30:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T10:30:28","slug":"new-monkey-discovered-with-orange-lips-in-democratic-republic-of-congo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/590236\/","title":{"rendered":"New monkey discovered with orange lips in Democratic Republic of Congo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A newly discovered species of monkey with striking orange lips has been found in the east-central Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The monkey \u2014 Colobus congoensis \u2014 is only the fifth new species of African monkey to be discovered in the past 75 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The discovery all began with a blurry photo in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Researchers from the Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation were exploring the lush rainforests of the Lomami National Park region when the came across the monkey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While the photo was partially obscured, the field team strongly believed it was a species of monkey not previously known to researchers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, it would be about a decade until a field researcher again photographed the monkey in November 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Colobus congoensis, who bears a mask-like appearance with an orange cream patch surrounding the mouth, was then documented seven more times in different locations in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Junior Amboko, co-corresponding author of the findings first published in <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0349857\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PLoS One<\/a>, said the discovery was a testament to DRC&#8217;s &#8220;remarkable natural heritage&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This discovery is both exciting and deeply personal, highlighting the extraordinary biodiversity of my homeland and how much remains undocumented,&#8221; he said in a <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fau.edu\/newsdesk\/articles\/new-monkey-species-congo.php\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man leans against a tree.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/f7b0f0fb983a9b80209a8fa047191c48.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Junior Amboko was a leading researcher in discovering the species. (Supplied: Florida Atlantic University)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Amboko told <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c15y5wgj4x8o\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the BBC <\/a>the species&#8217; was &#8220;kind of shy&#8221; and tended to hide in high trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;As part of our search, we interviewed people in 52 villages close to where the animals live. And only people in eight villages [had ever seen] them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The people of the Balanga ethnic group who knew of the monkey referred to it by the name Likweli.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The monkey is one in the colobus group, and most closely resembles the Colobus satanas (black colobus), found in west-central Africa and Equatorial Guinea&#8217;s Bioko Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, genetic, anatomical and acoustic analyses confirmed the Colobus congoensis likely diverged from its closest known relative around 4 to 5 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Unlike the Colobus satanas or other colobus monkeys, the Colobus congoensis is much smaller, at about 6.8 kilograms, and distinguished by light-reflecting fur, long black facial hairs and large folded ears.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A black monkey sits in the tree.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/e3dbca627d2f3a4edc5e13653ea11167.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Colobus satanas, the closest sister species to colobus congoensis. (Supplied: Martin Royele\/Royele Safaris)<\/p>\n<p>Conservation concerns<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Between 2018 and 2022, researchers recorded 114 sightings across an estimated range of just 1,700 square kilometres \u2014 an unusually small range for Colobus monkeys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It appeared naturally isolated by rivers and forest barriers and dependent on scattered upland forest patches in the Congo Basin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">According to locals interviewed, it appeared the species was not specifically targeted by hunters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two monkeys on a tree branch. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/9d78f1703d1d5c9fee02e4b1035a8cb0.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Colobus congoensis now faces habitat loss and conservation concerns.
