{"id":59031,"date":"2025-09-12T07:34:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T07:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/59031\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T07:34:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T07:34:12","slug":"irish-intelligence-officers-sent-to-train-at-us-military-facilities-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/59031\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish intelligence officers sent to train at US military facilities \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ireland\u2019s military intelligence service has set up its own training school to grow staff numbers as the unit seeks to significantly expand operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">It is also sending officers to US military installations for lengthy training camps to improve the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/defence-forces\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/defence-forces\/\">Defence Forces<\/a>\u2019 \u201cintelligence tradecraft\u201d and enable them to operate more efficiently overseas and at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The goal is to create a more \u201cadaptive and competent\u201d force, which will have a presence across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is part of a dramatic overhaul and expansion of the military\u2019s intelligence apparatus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Other developments include an official renaming of the agency to the Irish Military Intelligence Service (Imis). It was previously known as the Directorate of Military Intelligence, J2 or G2.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A new purpose-built headquarters has been opened in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a>, separate from the training facility, and there are plans for additional secure facilities around the country, starting at the Naval base in Haulbowline, Co Cork.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The developments follow recommendations from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/commission-on-the-defence-forces\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/commission-on-the-defence-forces\/\">Commission on the Defence Forces<\/a> in 2022 to modernise military intelligence, open up an intelligence school and bring the unit under the control of a brigadier general.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Earlier this year the Coalition\u2019s programme for Government also pledged to \u201creview our military intelligence structures to ensure that our intelligence services are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/08\/30\/ireland-must-focus-more-on-fending-off-external-threats-defence-forces-chief-says\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/08\/30\/ireland-must-focus-more-on-fending-off-external-threats-defence-forces-chief-says\/\">optimised to protect national security<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Traditionally, the Defence Forces has refused to comment on the activities of military intelligence. Its precise function and its interaction with the Garda Security and Intelligence Service, which retains primary responsibility for State security, are shrouded in secrecy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/09\/04\/why-is-an-garda-siochana-giving-money-to-cognyte-an-israeli-surveillance-company\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Why did An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na give money to Cognyte, an Israeli surveillance company?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">However, the latest issue of An Cosant\u00f3ir, the Defence Forces internal magazine, has published details about developments in the service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe primary role of Imis today is to provide strategic warning to the general staff and the Government of threats to Irish sovereign interests on [the] island and to troops and\/or facilities deployed abroad, a role which has expanded significantly from the G2, J2 roles of old,\u201d it said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe service also plays a role in ensuring national security with other State agencies.\u201d Imis also acts as the State\u2019s external intelligence service, it states. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Defence Forces Intelligence School, which is based in the Training Centre in the Curragh, Co Kildare, was set up last June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It will train recruits in various forms of intelligence gathering including human, signal, geospatial and open source intelligence, the publication said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fifty three Defence Forces personnel have been chosen for the first \u201cjoint military intelligence qualification course\u201d. This is a \u201cfundamental shift\u201d in how the Defence Forces selects intelligence officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/09\/01\/irish-troops-could-be-part-of-peacekeeping-force-in-ukraine-after-the-end-of-war\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Irish troops could be part of peacekeeping force in Ukraine after the end of warOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Students who complete the course will join Imis and be assigned to specially designed intelligence hubs around the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">As part of this expansion process, Irish military intelligence officers have been sent to the US Navy facility in San Diego and the United States Army Intelligence Centre of Excellence  in Arizona. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish Army officers have undergone \u201cextensive\u201d training at the Arizona facility, with Air Corps and Naval officers going there next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Through various courses, personnel will focus on \u201ccritical thinking\u201d and \u201canalytical tradecraft\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Ireland newly qualified intelligence officers and noncommissioned officers \u201care currently instructing the next generation of Irish military intelligence professionals, ensuring the long-term benefit is a more adaptive, competent and situationally aware force, reinforcing national security while also deepening international ties,\u201d the publication states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Imis is one of several State agencies empowered to conduct communications surveillance of citizens.
