No one loves a sensitive female indie-folk singer-songwriter quite like Paul Mescal<\/a>. The Oscar-nominated actor famously fanboyed<\/a> his way into the heart of Phoebe Bridgers, to whom he was briefly engaged<\/a>. Now he\u2019s dating Gracie Abrams<\/a>, another Taylor Swift tour opener who happens to be somewhat of a Phoebe disciple<\/a>. (Mescal\u2019s younger sister, Nell, is also a rising folk musician<\/a>.) So it was only time that he\u2019d pick up the pen himself.<\/p>\n

Mescal is listed as a co-writer on Abrams\u2019s song \u201cImaginary Friend,\u201d off her new album, Daughter From Hell. The song is about feeling the absence of a past lover: \u201cI talk to you, you don\u2019t talk back,\u201d Abrams sings. \u201c\u2019Cause you\u2019re a figment of my imagination \/ Man, I fucking hate it.\u201d It\u2019s not a happy song \u2014 of course it\u2019s not! It\u2019s by two people whose idea of a romantic time is a Mitski concert<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Abrams teased the collaboration on the New York Times\u2019 Popcast podcast<\/a>. She said that she and Mescal didn\u2019t set out to write together. She just noticed that she didn\u2019t have any \u201cstrummers\u201d on her album, so she and Mescal ended up \u201cfucking around\u201d and \u201ctrading lines\u201d back and forth. Now his contributions have been immortalized forever. It\u2019s a boyfriend privilege that he shares with his friend Joe Alwyn, who co-wrote several songs on Swift\u2019s folklore and evermore under the pseudonym William Bowery. Congrats to Paul!<\/p>\n
