Tricky<\/a> may not have released an album in six years, but he has kept busy; Theis Thaws and Lonely Guest are just two aliases the trip-hop innovator has used to record new music. But, as press-release legend has it, when Tricky\u2019s manager, Alan McGee, heard the bones of the tracks that would become Different When It\u2019s Silent<\/a>, he saw a rose by any other name. \u201cIn my mind it was another side project,\u201d Tricky said. McGee countered: \u201cMate, this is a Tricky album.\u201d His 15th studio effort reconfigures blues, hip-hop, punk, and electro into a stark, collagist sound that emphasizes those genre\u2019s similarities while highlighting their contrasts. This is the Tricky sound, canonized.<\/p>\n

Lenny Kaye: Goin\u2019 Local [Yep Roc]\"Image<\/p>\n

You\u2019re never too old to start fresh\u2014just ask Patti Smith Group\u2019s Lenny Kaye<\/a> who, at 79, is releasing his debut solo album. Goin\u2019 Local arrives a few years after the release of Kaye\u2019s memoir, Lightning Striking: Ten Transformative Moments in Rock and Roll, and includes contributions from jazz pianist Matthew Shipp, Railroad Earth\u2019s Tim Carbone, the Jayhawks<\/a>\u2019 John Jackson, and David Mansfield. \u201cI\u2019ve always loved the local, its intimacy and camaraderie,\u201d Kaye said in a press release. \u201cI feel that the truest \u2018Goin\u2019 Local\u2019 is the privilege to go inside my own head and hear how I sound to me.\u201d Still, old friends are gold friends, and Smith does have a co-write here, on the song \u201cSolstice.\u201d<\/p>\n
