{"id":591957,"date":"2026-07-18T10:33:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T10:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/591957\/"},"modified":"2026-07-18T10:33:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-18T10:33:17","slug":"one-dead-from-legionnaires-disease-in-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/591957\/","title":{"rendered":"One dead from Legionnaires&#8217; disease in New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One person has died in New York\u2019s Upper East Side neighborhood after contracting Legionnaires\u2019 disease, health officials said Friday in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York City Health Department also said that 67 cases had been confirmed in the neighborhood and that 12 people were hospitalized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legionnaires\u2019 disease is a serious lung infection caused by Legionella bacteria, with a fatality rate of nine percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People can become infected through contaminated water or by inhaling airborne microdroplets. The disease is not transmitted from person to person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York City Health Department urged anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms \u2014 such as fever, chills, muscle aches or coughing \u2014 to seek medical attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, officials have ordered at least 76 buildings \u2014 including one housing the famed Metropolitan Museum of Art \u2014 to undertake special cleaning after water samples tested positive for the bacteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disease takes its name from the first known outbreak, which occurred in 1976 at a Philadelphia hotel where the American Legion veterans\u2019 organization was holding a convention.
