{"id":5929,"date":"2025-08-17T23:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T23:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/5929\/"},"modified":"2025-08-17T23:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T23:23:10","slug":"assessments-of-children-who-may-have-had-unnecessary-hip-surgeries-pushed-back-to-next-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/5929\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessments of children who may have had unnecessary hip surgeries pushed back to next year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Children who may have been subjected to unnecessary hip dysplasia surgery must wait until next year before they are assessed by a team of external experts for a second medical opinion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In May, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\">HSE<\/a> published an independent audit on hip surgery thresholds for children with developmental dysplasia of the hip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/05\/23\/audit-finds-almost-70-per-cent-of-hip-operations-in-two-childrens-hospitals-unnecessary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> examined 147 cases across three hospitals<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temple-street-hospital\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Temple Street<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cappagh-national-orthopaedic-hospital\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/children-s-health-ireland-chi-at-crumlin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Crumlin Hospital<\/a>. In Temple Street, 60 per cent of surgeries audited did not meet the clinical threshold for surgical intervention, while this was the case for 79 per cent in the Cappagh hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Following the report, the HSE announced it was commissioning an independent expert review panel that will work to review patient files to determine the appropriateness of the original decision to operate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The HSE said then that the review panel would be set up within six months. However, a spokeswoman for the executive has now said it will be January before the review of individual cases begins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The health service issued an international call for experts, with applications accepted up until last Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cExpressions of interest have been received from a wide range of regions including Ireland, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\">UK<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">USA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/canada\/\">Canada<\/a>, Asia and other parts of Europe,\u201d the spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThese submissions will be subject to a shortlisting and recruitment process prior to the formal announcement of the panel, which is expected to convene in September.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said an international expert has been identified and agreed to chair the external panel, and terms are being negotiated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The organisation is designing a \u201crobust scientific and methodological framework\u201d for the review, which is expected to be agreed between September and December this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is expected that the review of individual cases will commence in January. This timeline reflects the complexity of the work involved and the need to ensure a rigorous and comprehensive approach,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The HSE, Children\u2019s Health Ireland (CHI) and patient advocates held a meeting on the external review panel last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement following the meeting, Hip Dysplasia Advocacy Group, a newly-established representative organisation, said there must be \u201cfull transparency\u201d between the HSE and the families regarding these reviews.
