Rather a Nolan movie brings out the non-frequent moviegoer, read 43% of the audience only head to the movies every few months or so, or even a few times a year according to PostTrak exits. Not to mention, it\u2019s clear that anti-woke noise didn\u2019t slow ticket sales one iota. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tEntTelligence reports that 7.5M people watched The Odyssey in North America versus 5.9M for Oppenheimer.  Average ticket prices for Odyssey were general at $15.32 (versus Oppenheimer\u2018s $13.44), PLF at $19.07 (vs. Oppenheimer\u2018s $16.64), and 70MM at $22.46 (versus $17.03). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tGlobal is <strong>$264.1M<\/strong>, which as we told you yesterday is the biggest worldwide opening for Nolan, ahead of Dark Knight Rises ($249M WW). International\u2019s $139.6M start in 73 markets, 12,700 locations and 25,600 screens is also the biggest foreign debut for Nolan. It\u2019s Uni\u2019s biggest ever opening in 11 markets and the biggest ever opening for Nolan in 48 markets including France, Italy, India, Spain, Brazil, Netherlands and Poland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tExclaimed Universal\u2019s Domestic Distribution Boss this morning, \u201cIncredibly rewarding to see the palpable excitement in theatres this weekend with the release of The Odyssey.\u00a0 Once again, Christopher Nolan has crafted an epic adventure on a scale rarely seen as audiences respond with not only tremendous results at the box office, but with reactions to the film that are beyond stellar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAMC was the leading chain for the movie with more than $23M so far, followed by Regal with $17M+, Cinemark with $11.7M, and Canada\u2019s Cineplex with $7.4M. EntTelligence shows a near split between evening and matinee shows as far as attendance goes at 53% (after 5pm) to 46% (before 5PM).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe AMC Lincoln Square in NYC has now become the highest grossing venue for The Odyssey with more than $394K. TCL Chinese was second with $381K, Regal Irvine Spectrum was third with $307K, AMC Empire 25 in NYC was fourth with $261K and Regal LA Live was fifth with $253,6K. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhen we say the movie largely played everywhere, it did. EntTelligence shows that smaller markets commanded a similar share of attendance, if not greater than metro areas, i.e. High urban areas (2.5M+ population) accounted for 17% of Odyssey, followed by Urban (1.5M-2.5M) at 26%, medium 500K to 1M at 25%, rural 100k-500k at 27%, with small towns (less than 100K) yielding 5% of admissions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTop ten cities were LA ($7.5M Friday-Saturday gross), NYC ($6.7M), San Francisco ($3M), Chicago ($2.8M), Dallas ($2.8M), Toronto ($2.7M), DC ($2.6M), Houston ($2.1M), Atlanta ($1.966M) and Philly ($1.96M). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tUpdated over indexing regions by box office gross include West, Mountain and South Central. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBreaking down the whole large format and Imax of it. All enchanced formats\u2013Imax, PLFs, 70MM\u2013generated 53% of the domestic opening. Imax\u2019s near 24% share of the weekend B.O. is their third highest share ever behind Nolan\u2019s Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Imax 70MM was responsible for 4%, which was we told you is a big deal since there\u2019s only 34 auditoriums. Overall 70MM was 7% share (including Imax cash). EntTelligence shows that 70MM brought in 5% of admission while 2D was 95% (that\u2019s very similar to Oppenheimer). PLFs were 20% share, and of that Dolby generated 4%. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn regards to the top five grossing Imax 70MM venues, they were as follows 1.) TCL Chinese with $367K, 2. Regal LA Live with $206K, 3. AMC Metreon 16 San Francisco with $173K, 4. AMC Lincoln Square with $172K and Regal Opry Mills in Nashville with a near $169K.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMidweek business for these PLF and Imax sites is going to be huge, read even the No. 12 grossing 70MM Imax theater, the Harkins Arizona Mills in greater Phoenix ($106K for weekend), has sold out shows for a week. The 7:45am showtime alone there was sold out for Odyssey. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe marketing machine for The Odyssey began a year ago literally when the first Imax 70MM tickets went on sale. That was a bold move, and an unprecedented one \u2014 arguably the first time any major motion picture studio had the cajones to put tickets on sale for an event film a year out. The promise: one of the most spectacle filmmakers was adapting a foundational text. The sellouts indicated a very hot indicator of buzz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tUpdated market stats: Rentrak reports that summer for the first Friday in May through this past Sunday stands at $2.79B, just behind 2019\u2019s $3B at the same point in time. This weekend is coming in for all titles grossing $193.5M, +41% from the same frame last year. The 2026 YTD B.O. is raging at $5.4B, +10% over the same Jan. 1-July 19 period in 2025. The Odyssey ranks behind Dark Knight Rise\u2018s first Friday\/previews of $75.7M and Dark Knight\u2018s $67.1M.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOverseas, The Odyssey is bound for <strong>$137.3M<\/strong> in 73 markets bringing its global opening to <strong>$257.8M<\/strong>, which is the third highest opening YTD after Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($372.5M) and Toy Story 5 ($312M). It\u2019s also Nolan\u2019s biggest global opening ever ahead of The Dark Knight Rises ($198M) and Oppenheimer ($180M).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAs far as that $137M+ offshore start goes, that\u2019s Nolan\u2019s biggest foreign debut ever ahead of Oppenheimer and Dark Knight Rises. The 2x Oscar winning filmmaker is notching his biggest opening of all-time in 45 markets including France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Netherlands, and Brazil. It\u2019s also Universal\u2019s biggest opening ever in 11 markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHere in the states, if these numbers hold, The Odyssey will rank as the fifth best opening for an R-rated movie after Deadpool &amp; Wolverine ($211.4M), Deadpool ($132.4M), Deadpool 2 ($125.5M) and It: Chapter One ($123.4M). Overseas, The Odyssey is the second biggest opening of all-time for an R-rated feature behind Deadpool &amp; Wolverine ($233.3M in reported opening).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Universal theatrical release lands Nolan his fourth solid A CinemaScore after Oppenheimer, Dark Knight Rises, Dark Knight and Batman Begins (Dunkirk received an A-). In Screen Engine\/Rentrak exits, the near three hour epic gets a strong 81% definite recommend, and the best definite recommend with men over 25 at 84, who showed up as the majority quad at 43%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMore than any star in this very starry film, the chief reason why moviegoers went to see it was Nolan, hands down at 51%.  The cast as a whole was the second reason why people went at 44% while Damon ranked 27%. As we told you previously, The Odyssey is Damon\u2019s biggest opening ever at the domestic box office. For Robert Pattinson, The Odyssey is his fifth highest opening ever at the domestic B.O., but it\u2019s his fifth to open north of $100M after Twilight: New Moon ($142.8M), Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 ($141M), Twilight: Breaking Dawn 1 ($138.1M) and The Batman ($134M). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThere was some walk-up to this feature which has sparse availability of Imax seats in its opening weekend at popular locations like the AMC Lincoln Center, AMC Citywalk, and Regal Sherman Oaks Galleria with 47% buying their tickets same day Friday versus 53% who purchased tickets in the last week or more according to PostTrak. Imax and PLFs are driving 52% of the business; broken out that\u2019s 25% for the former, and 27% for the latter. Odyssey is raking in cash everywhere across the nation, but popping the most in the Mountain and Western regions. The TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, which rarely (if ever) ranks as the top grossing venue in the nation is The Odyssey\u2018s top leading single location with $242,5K in the bank so far (The venue just installed a 70MM Imax screen). Not surprising at all, but The Odyssey\u2018s top ten theaters all have an Imax or 70MM screen or both. The expectation here is that Imax and 70MM auditoriums will be filled for weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDiversity demos on Odyssey are 50% Caucasian, 24% Latino and Hispanic, 12% Black, and 9% Asian American. Overall guy leaning at 59%. After men over 25 (43%), the second most attended demo was women over 25 (31%), men under 25 (16%) and women under (10%). Largest age group was 25-34 with a near 30%. Universal\u2019s Christopher Nolan epic <strong>The Odyssey<\/strong> is looking at a first Friday and previews of <strong>$50M<\/strong> which will catapult it to a <strong>$117M<\/strong> 3-day opening (note some rivals are see more in the $120M range) at 3,919 theaters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThat\u2019s the biggest opening for Matt Damon as a lead star, outstripping 2007\u2019s The Bourne Ultimatum ($69.2M), and it\u2019s the best opening for a live-action feature year-to-date at the domestic B.O., besting Lionsgate\u2019s Michael ($97.2M). Overall, it\u2019s the third highest opening YTD behind Disney\/Pixar\u2019s Toy Story 5 ($159.6M) and Illumination\/Universal\/Nintendo\u2019s Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131.7M). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOther records: The Odyssey is charting the highest grossing opening weekend for an R-rated film YTD ahead of Backrooms ($81.4M). It\u2019s also Universal\u2019s highest grossing opening weekend for an R-rated film, beating out Fifty Shades of Grey ($85.1M). As we already told you below, it\u2019s the third highest start for Nolan after The Dark Knight Rises ($160.8M) and The Dark Knight ($158.4M).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTop 5 for the weekend is as follows:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t1.) Add it all up and that\u2019s 58% from Imax, PLFs and 70MM prints. Sources told us that advance tickets sales heading into the weekend were around $30M-$40M (By comparison, Wicked: For Good clocked $60M in advance tickets before its $147M U.S.\/Canada opening, while Deadpool &amp; Wolverine counted $50M in presales, that sequel opening to a R-rated domestic record $211.4M). Imax 70MM showtimes for The Odyssey sold out a year in advance, and if you\u2019re looking for Imax or large-format seats in the next three days, chances are you\u2019ll be sitting in the front row, cranking your neck up at the screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSo then how does Odyssey\u2018s previews stack up to other appointment-viewing movies, which are promoted and driven by Imax sales?
