A signed\u00a0David\u00a0Hockney\u00a0print discovered in a donated book has sold for more than \u00a341,000.<\/p>\n
The discovery was made by a volunteer<\/a> at The Salvation Army\u2019s charity<\/a> shop in Norwich<\/a>, who noticed that a donated book contained an original print by the artist, who died aged 88 last month.<\/p>\n Last year, a copy of Paper Pools was donated over the counter at the Goat Lane charity shop.<\/p>\n Soon after, long-serving volunteer and local artist Jemma Banks noticed how valuable the donation might be.<\/p>\n After flicking through the pages of the publication, she found an original signed print that had remained tucked safely inside the book for 46 years.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n Start your day informed with Metro’s News Updates<\/a><\/strong> newsletter or get Breaking News<\/a> <\/strong>alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n After the print was researched by the Salvation Army Trading Company and online eBay store, the book was listed for auction on The Salvation Army\u2019s Collectables & Curiosity eBay shop.<\/p>\n \t\t The charity said bidding \u2018quickly gathered pace\u2019, with the artwork selling for \u00a341,160.<\/p>\n The Salvation Army has said the buyer, who has asked to remain anonymous, is \u2018thrilled with his purchase\u2019.<\/p>\n He said: \u2018I\u2019ve admired\u00a0David\u00a0Hockney\u2019s work<\/a> for many years, so acquiring such an iconic piece is incredibly special.<\/p>\n \u2018I\u2019m delighted that, at the same time, the purchase will help support the invaluable work of The Salvation Army. It\u2019s wonderful to know that something with such cultural significance can also make a meaningful difference to people\u2019s lives.\u2019<\/p>\n Ms Banks added: \u2018It was a privilege to hold a genuine signed\u00a0David\u00a0Hockney\u00a0print in my hands, and I was amazed that it had remained safely inside the book for 46 years, looking as fresh as the day it came off the lithographic press.<\/p>\n \u2018As a local artist, I recognised that the book might be something special, but I never imagined just how significant it would turn out to be. <\/p>\n \t\t \u2018I\u2019m delighted that something hidden away for so long will now help raise money for people in our community who need it most.\u2019<\/p>\n Published in 1980, Paper Pools details some of\u00a0Hockney\u2019s most celebrated swimming pool artworks. <\/p>\n The original signed print enclosed within the book made it an \u2018exceptionally rare collector\u2019s piece\u2019.<\/p>\n Major Tracey Bale, who leads The Salvation Army\u2019s Norwich Citadel and works closely with staff at the shop, said: \u2018Jemma\u2019s knowledge and curiosity made all the difference. <\/p>\n \u2018Thanks to her recognising that this was far more than an ordinary donated book, an incredible piece of art has been preserved and transformed into vital funds for our work.<\/p>\n \u2018Our volunteers see thousands of donations every week, and this story highlights the expertise, care and dedication they bring every single day. Every donation matters, and occasionally one arrives that has an extraordinary story to tell.\u2019<\/p>\n One of the most celebrated and influential British artists of modern times,\u00a0Hockney\u00a0died peacefully at home on June 11.
