The world of Harry Potter is mourning the loss of one of its foundational creators, Stuart Craig, <\/strong>a celebrated artist and three-time Oscar winner, who died Sunday at 83 after a long battle with Parkinson\u2019s disease. His passing leaves behind a legacy of pure movie magic.<\/p>\n The official Harry Potter Instagram account shared a moving tribute, stating, “We are incredibly saddened to hear the passing of Stuart Craig. Without him, this wonderful world of imagination and magic would not have been possible.\u201d<\/p>\n The comments section was flooded with love from heartbroken fans and colleagues alike.<\/p>\n “He was the real wizard,” one fan wrote, recounting a memory of meeting the humble visionary.<\/p>\n Another added, “He is responsible for so much joy in all of us. Thank you \u2764\ufe0f\u201d<\/p>\n Born in Norwich, England, in 1942, Craig found his true calling after painting scenery for a local opera production, which sparked a lifelong passion for set design, according to his obituary in The New York Times<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n After graduating from the Royal College of Art in London in 1966, Craig climbed the ranks in set design from apprenticeship to head production designer, first reaching critical acclaim in 1980 for his work on David Lynch\u2019s film The Elephant Man, which earned Craig his first Oscar nomination and a BAFTA award.<\/p>\n From there, Craig\u2019s career skyrocketed, as he earned Oscars for his stunning work on the films Gandhi (1982), Dangerous Liaisons (1988) and The English Patient (1996), cementing his reputation as one of cinema’s most revered designers.<\/p>\n “I would postpone a film to use him,\u201d the late iconic Director Richard Attenborough<\/strong>, who worked with Craig on Gandhi, told The New York Times<\/a> in 1993. \u201cHe has the most wonderful taste.\u201d<\/p>\n In 1999, Craig received a call from director Chris Columbus<\/strong> to work on the first Harry Potter film. He told The Guardian<\/a> in 2011 that when he first read the novel, which happened to be on the plane ride to meet with the director, his \u201cfirst reaction was fright: How the hell are we going to do this?\u201d<\/p>\n His solution was to create a world that felt both magical and deeply real.<\/p>\n \u201cWith magic you don\u2019t want to be too whimsical, you want it to grow out of something grounded,\u201d Craig explained to Wide Screen Journal<\/a> in a 2010 interview.<\/p>\n He achieved this by clashing different time periods together, creating a unique visual style.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s the most wonderful mix in that they wear jeans and T shirts, use \u201850s technology, [and] live in 13th-, 14th-, 15th-century surroundings,” he said in the same interview.<\/p>\n Craig\u2019s influence can be seen not just in the films themselves, but in the physical spaces fans still explore today.
