Due to the illness, I would be unable to safely do my job as a consultant. I ended up above my pension fund threshold in January 2025. But if left to retire normally, I would have done so in 2027, when I could have availed of the increases in SFT (Standard Fund Threshold).I am now paying \u20ac336 per month to Revenue for the next 20 years. Can I challenge this?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Although \u201cunderstandably frustrating\u201d, the reader is unlikely to succeed in challenging the tax, despite<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/07\/20\/how-big-should-your-pension-pot-be\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/07\/20\/how-big-should-your-pension-pot-be\/\"> retiring early<\/a> due to ill health, according to financial adviser Daniel Hardiman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hardiman, who is managing director of Hardiman Life &amp; Pensions in Tuam, Co Galway, says the threshold that applies is whichever was in force on the date the reader\u2019s pension began, \u201cnot a later, higher one\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Standard Fund Threshold (SFT), the maximum amount an individual can accumulate before becoming subject to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/personal-finance\/why-paying-too-much-into-your-pension-could-expose-you-to-a-big-tax-bill-1.3950133\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/personal-finance\/why-paying-too-much-into-your-pension-could-expose-you-to-a-big-tax-bill-1.3950133\">chargeable excess taxation<\/a>, rose for the first time since 2014 by \u20ac200,000 in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> It will rise by \u20ac200,000 each year until it reaches \u20ac2.8 million in 2029. Thereafter, the SFT will be indexed to wage growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As illness forced the reader to retire in 2025, they were measured against that year\u2019s lower limit rather than 2027\u2019s higher one, despite the fact that is the year they would have retired in the absence of ill health, Hardiman says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cA second factor compounds this for early and ill-health retirees specifically. Since 2014, public service pensions have been valued more highly the younger you are when they start, making it easier to breach the threshold than for someone retiring at normal age,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784683890_230_1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Will the State\u2019s plan for the Carlton Cinema site revitalise O\u2019Connell Street?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An appeal from the reader based on their taxation should they have retired as normal in 2027 would not succeed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/revenue-commissioners\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/revenue-commissioners\/\">Revenue<\/a>, Hardiman says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe rules must be applied as they stood on your retirement date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is, however, worth checking the chargeable excess tax (Cet) bill you\u2019re now paying was correctly calculated,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is also worth asking their HSE pension administrator for a full breakdown of how their pension was valued, what threshold was applied and whether tax already paid on the lump sum was credited against the Cet bill, Hardiman says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/07\/20\/how-big-should-your-pension-pot-be\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How big should your pension pot be for a comfortable retirement in Ireland?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAt \u20ac336 a month over 20 years, that\u2019s a total repayment north of \u20ac80,000, so it\u2019s worth having a public sector pensions tax expert check the figures. Any genuine error can and should be corrected,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He adds that it is \u201cnot all one-sided\u201d, noting that the reader\u2019s ill-health pension is paid in full &#8211; unlike ordinary early retirement, which is normally reduced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYou also got two years\u2019 earlier access to your pension and lump sum than you would have waiting for 2027, which is worth weighing against the tax charge in any comparison,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The SFT was introduced in 2005 at a level of \u20ac5 million, increasing each year before it was cut back, before falling to  \u20ac2 million in 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hardiman says the threshold generally \u201ccatches more people than it used to, and not always the people you\u2019d expect\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSenior public servants \u2013 consultants, senior garda\u00ed, judges and others \u2013 can breach it simply through the value of a career-long defined benefit pension, regardless of what they\u2019re paid in cash terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnyone with a large private pension pot should be equally alert. Once the SFT settles on \u20ac2.8 million, any private pension value above it is taxed at 40 per cent upfront.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd because further income tax and USC then apply when that excess is eventually drawn down, the effective combined tax rate on the amount over the threshold can run as high as 70 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s a bracket worth knowing when you\u2019re well before retirement &#8211; not after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If you have work-related questions, from how to deal with burnout to running your own business, The Irish Times Work Q&amp;A column is here to help.
