{"id":60047,"date":"2025-09-12T18:26:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T18:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/60047\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T18:26:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T18:26:07","slug":"belfast-based-lawyer-paul-tweed-was-defamed-in-book-by-expert-in-middle-east-high-court-rules-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/60047\/","title":{"rendered":"Belfast-based lawyer Paul Tweed was defamed in book by expert in Middle East, High Court rules \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A book written by an expert on the Middle East was defamatory of libel lawyer Paul Tweed, the High Court in Belfast has ruled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A judge held that Dr Andreas Krieg\u2019s publication contained a meaning that the Belfast-based lawyer allegedly acted unprofessionally by sending cease and desist letters in an effort to intimidate critics of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-arab-emirates\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-arab-emirates\">United Arab Emirates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Justice Colton also reached a similar finding over the contents of a tweet by the academic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI have concluded that the words complained of do have a defamatory meaning,\u201d he confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Based on the ruling, a further hearing is now expected to determine whether or not Dr Krieg is liable in the libel action. He can still mount a number of potential defences to the claim against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Tweed is seeking damages over an alleged reference to him in the publication \u2018Subversion: The Strategic Weaponization of Narratives\u2019. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dr Krieg is an associate professor at the School of Security Studies in King\u2019s College, London and political risk analyst on the Gulf region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Published in 2023, his book has been described as an examination of how \u201cmalicious state and nonstate actors take advantage of the information space to sow political chaos\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Tweed, known for successfully representing celebrity clients such as Britney Spears, Liam Neeson, Nicolas Cage and Jennifer Lopez, alleged that the academic has damaged his reputation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The case centred on a passage in the book written for postgraduates and practitioners in the area of information studies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During a preliminary hearing to determine the meaning of the content, the high-profile solicitor\u2019s legal team argued that he was subjected to a \u201cgratuitous\u201d defamation attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They claimed he had been wrongly depicted as a covert agent of the UAE deployed to intimidate and silence its critics. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Tweed also sued over a posting on X, contending it contained meanings which ranged from him being an unethical solicitor to being a UAE agent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Counsel for Dr Krieg insisted there was nothing defamatory in the portrayal of a legitimate lawyer-client relationship.
