{"id":60155,"date":"2025-09-12T19:36:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T19:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/60155\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T19:36:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T19:36:08","slug":"more-than-100-judges-subject-to-complaint-last-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/60155\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 100 judges subject to complaint last year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">One hundred and eleven judges were the subject of complaints last year to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/judicial-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/judicial-council\/\">Judicial Council<\/a> but not one complaint was found to be admissible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"> The 2024 Judicial Conduct Committee report shows that the 296 complaints received last year represent a 37 per cent  increase on the 216 complaints received in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The report \u2013 contained in the council\u2019s 2024 annual report  shows one individual made 28  complaints against the judiciary with another individual lodging 15  complaints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">However, the report shows that 237 complaints were determined to be inadmissible and not one complaint was  admissible. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Twenty-seven complaints concluded because the Act ceased to apply, two complaints were withdrawn and another 30 remained for consideration at the end of last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Secretary to the Judicial Council, Kevin O\u2019Neill said in the report that \u201cthe baseless conclusions that a judge is biased in favour of the opposing parties by reason of not listening to everything which a complainant wishes to say, or because of dissatisfaction with a decision, is regularly raised as a complaint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cMany complainants continue to incorrectly perceive this system as an opportunity to express dissatisfaction with the outcome of court cases, whether or not they were actively involved in those cases\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The report estimates that more than 90 per cent of complaints came from litigants who represented themselves in court proceedings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr O\u2019Neill said:  \u201cThe prevalence of complaints from unrepresented parties continues to suggest that persons who do not have the benefit of legal advice have greater difficulty understanding the court process and what has occurred and why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Having considered more than 500 complaints by the end of 2024, including listening to the audio recording of many hearings, \u201cthe conduct of the Irish judiciary is of the highest standard\u201d, Mr O\u2019Neill said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The report states that \u201cseveral complainants continue to make inadmissible complaints directed at the same judge.
