{"id":601651,"date":"2026-07-24T08:04:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T08:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/601651\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T08:04:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T08:04:13","slug":"therapy-speak-is-turning-us-into-sissies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/601651\/","title":{"rendered":"Therapy speak is turning us into sissies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As one who\u2019s always been keen on putting their hand up and admitting to their faults (a perverse form of boasting, I suspect) I was\u00a0always\u00a0suspicious of the\u00a0medicalisation\u00a0of character flaws which apparently\u00a0render\u00a0us helpless in the clammy hands of Fortuna. It was bad enough when friends who\u2019d\u00a0generally\u00a0always\u00a0seemed highly capable jumped on the ADHD bus in later life, suddenly flinching at loud noises when they\u2019d spent a good deal of their lives dancing to ear-splitting techno. But it was another sort of annoying when ex-friends who were merely awful people started blaming all their past ghastliness first on ADHD and then \u2013 still not feeling\u00a0special\u00a0enough \u2013\u00a0on autism, a serious condition which affects a tiny amount of people.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But if you want to create\u00a0\u2018conditions\u2019\u00a0where previously there were simply personalities, fill your boots; everyone\u00a0benefits\u00a0from having a hobby. Where I draw the line is when they\u00a0attempt\u00a0to drag me on to the bus with them. No, I am not\u00a0a\u00a0\u2018narcissist\u2019\u00a0who is\u00a0\u2018on the spectrum\u2019\u00a0\u2013\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0simply a self-adoring show-off with a tendency to fidget.\u00a0\u2018We\u2019ll relax and take our time!\u2019\u00a0I invariably tell my restaurant companion, and if they know me\u00a0well,\u00a0they smile sceptically.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0already catching the waiter\u2019s eye and planning the next watering hole. But I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have Attention Deficit Syndrome \u2013\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0just greedy\u00a0for\u00a0the next thing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a real relief to have psychologists come\u00a0out and\u00a0call a halt to\u00a0this\u00a0new dance\u00a0craze. In the\u00a0Times\u00a0this week,\u00a0Charlotte Alt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/healthcare\/article\/therapy-jargon-conversation-vjdmhp9f7\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/healthcare\/article\/therapy-jargon-conversation-vjdmhp9f7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">writes<\/a>: \u2018Therapy-speak, which is the casual use of psychological jargon, has made its way into everyday conversation and is thrown around in millions of videos on social media purporting to explain how to spot if someone is \u201ctoxic\u201d or if something is \u201ctriggering\u201d\u2019.\u00a0Experts warn that casual use of terms which have specific meanings in clinical contexts risk diluting their significance and\u00a0\u2018over-pathologising\u2019\u00a0everyday human emotions\u2019.\u00a0Or, as\u00a0the clinical psychologist Marianne Trent put\u00a0it:\u00a0\u2018One\u00a0of the trickier aspects of being a human is to feel awful, but it\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0mean\u00a0that every uncomfortable feeling we have is a mental health condition. In the same\u00a0way, not every difficult person has\u00a0a personality disorder.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When I was young, people got drunk because they enjoyed it. When I was a young adult, people caught on that they could wriggle out of responsibility for things they enjoyed but which were taking over their lives (such as drinking) by blaming their mothers. Now, like the writer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/comment\/columnists\/article\/caitlin-moran-binge-drinking-adhd-l3fhcsglk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Caitlin Moran<\/a>,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0probably a\u00a0binge-drinker because, like her, you have ADHD. Am I very\u00a0bad\u00a0for\u00a0wishing that people still got drunk for no reason more complex because they enjoyed it? Life was so simple then. Some people were straight; some were eccentric. But unless you were actually hearing voices, your mental health was not an excuse to be a bore \u2013 or a\u00a0boor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0not just me.\u00a0The similarly\u00a0jaded journalist Katie Glass recounts:\u00a0\u2018People turning up late\/forgetting plans\/not answering texts \u2013 and blaming their \u201cneurodiverse brains\u201d.\u2019\u00a0One\u00a0friend\u2019s\u00a0ex claims to\u00a0have\u202f \u2018Oppositional Defiant Disorder\u2019 which means he gets angry if she asks him to\u00a0do\u00a0anything with their children. Another one has a funny line about dating self-diagnosing men in which mental health is the new \u2018It\u2019s not you, it\u2019s me\u2019\u00a0because they all blame their selfishness on\u00a0it\u00a0now:\u00a0\u2018I\u2019m autistic, I can\u2019t help behaving badly!\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Unless you were actually hearing voices, your mental health was not an excuse to be a bore \u2013 or a\u00a0boor\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Since the turn of the century, autism\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemediacentre.org\/expert-reaction-to-interim-report-on-rise-in-conditions-such-as-adhd-and-autism-as-commissioned-by-wes-streeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">diagnoses<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0up\u00a0a whopping\u00a0640 per cent and ADHD\u00a0almost\u00a01,600 per cent.\u00a0According to the\u00a0Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), one in four of us are now\u00a0\u2018disabled\u2019\u00a0\u2013 this is driven not by people who are physically unable to walk, like me, or suffering from life-changing illnesses, such as cancer, but by people who are feeling a bit\u00a0mis. Forgive me if I\u2019m not overflowing with the oat-milk of human kindness here, but I\u2019d advise anyone feeling that they can\u2019t get out of bed because they failed to score their dream job to confine themselves to a wheelchair for a week, or to walk around with their eyes closed for a day \u2013 and see how that messes with your precious, special mind.\u00a0As someone who is disabled,\u00a0if I\u00a0was\u00a0on a desert island,\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0be done; if someone with ADHD was,\u00a0they\u2019d\u00a0pull themselves together and get on with the business of building shelters and catching fish.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Britain already spends more on health and disability benefits\u00a0(\u00a383\u00a0billion)\u00a0than on\u00a0defence\u00a0(\u00a363 billion) according to the\u00a0Office for Budget Responsibility. With the arrival of John Healey as Chancellor,\u00a0perhaps\u00a0we\u00a0can at last hope to see this ludicrous situation reversed. But what are we defending? A growing population of people\u00a0\u2013 mostly young and who should be at the peak of rude health \u2013\u00a0who are the modern equivalent of those Victorian maidens lying on fainting couches, too enervated to engage with or enjoy life?\u00a0\u2018Self-diagnosis\u2019\u00a0is merely hypochondria dressed up in some sassy pseudo-scientific\u00a0drag; in fact,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not going too far to say that some doctors give out diagnoses to get patients off their backs.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Michael Simmons wrote<a href=\"https:\/\/spectator.com\/article\/shut-up-about-your-disability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0here<\/a>\u00a0recently:\u00a0\u2018We live in a society in which disabled people must be described as merely\u00a0\u201cdifferently abled\u201d,\u00a0while\u00a0apparently requiring\u00a0more state support than ever before.\u00a0It is a society in which autism is idiotically advertised as a\u00a0\u201csuperpower\u201d \u2013\u00a0a slogan particularly galling for those families caring for people who cannot speak or live independently.\u00a0Doctors know\u00a0this\u00a0but few speak out.\u00a0Many privately describe the visible\u00a0\u201cexhilaration\u201d\u00a0on the faces of patients they have just diagnosed with in-vogue conditions such as ADHD.\u00a0They\u2019re\u00a0gobsmacked\u00a0when they see the same patients announce the news on social media as though\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0won the Lottery rather than received confirmation of a lifelong\u00a0disorder.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0\u2018Worried Well\u2019\u00a0have become the\u00a0\u2018Smug\u00a0Sick\u2019\u00a0\u2013 sensitive flowers so complicated and precious that we\u00a0\u2018neurotypical\u2019\u00a0(the narrow-minded Normies who are only good for paying the taxes that enable the\u00a0\u2018neurodiverse\u2019\u00a0to put their feet up) can never begin to understand the exquisite torment of being in their very special shoes.\u00a0I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0wear proper shoes any more as my feet are so vulnerable to pressure sores, but I drag my old carcass out of bed at dawn because I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0imagine not\u00a0making an effort. I have tenacity and I have talent \u2013 but I have just as many vices as virtues, and\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0all mine, the good and the bad. Regrettably, there is a good deal of evidence to suggest that severe spinal cord injuries do affect the brain, so at some point I may literally become\u00a0\u2018neurodiverse\u2019\u00a0\u2013 but I won\u2019t be running around boasting about it as if it\u2019s a new handbag. Because, to me, stubbornly sticking to one\u2019s guns and refusing to identify as anything but an ordinary person with ordinary character flaws is the most original and brave choice one can make in this crazy world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0continue to fidget, interrupt and be distracted by bright, shiny things \u2013 but let me state here and now that anything which annoys or repels you about me, IS me \u2013 not some cod-condition\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0hiding behind.
