\n\tWho says toys are outdated? Disney and Pixar<\/a>\u2019s \u201cToy Story 5<\/a>,\u201d which grapples with the reality that kids would rather play with tech than dolls, has surpassed $1 billion globally and now ranks as the highest-grossing release of the year.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film has earned $448 million domestically and $573 million internationally for a global tally of $1.022 billion. It\u2019s the third movie of the year to cross the coveted milestone, following \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d ($1.001 billion) and \u201cMichael\u201d ($1.001 billion). Meanwhile, \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d which has earned $639.6 million after just two weekends of release, is primed to be the fourth film to notch $1 billion. And that\u2019s before \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day,\u201d a sequel to 2021\u2019s juggernaut \u201cNo Way Home,\u201d opens on July 31.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year is tracking to produce the most billion-dollar blockbusters since the pandemic upended the box office in 2020. In 2019, nine movies \u2014 including \u201cAvengers: Endgame,\u201d \u201cThe Lion King,\u201d \u201cAladdin,\u201d \u201cJoker,\u201d \u201cSpider-Man: Far From Home\u201d and \u201cCaptain Marvel\u201d \u2014 earned over $1 billion. The following year, plagued with months of COVID-related theater closures, not a single film crossed the billion-dollar mark. There was just one in 2021 (\u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home\u201d), three in 2022 (\u201cAvatar: The Way of Water,\u201d \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d and \u201cJurassic World Dominion\u201d), two in 2023 (\u201cBarbie\u201d and \u201cThe Super Mario Bros. Movie\u201d), three in 2024 (\u201cInside Out 2,\u201d \u201cDeadpool & Wolverine\u201d and \u201cMoana 2\u2033) and three in 2025 (\u201cZootopia 2,\u201d \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash\u201d and \u201cLilo & Stitch\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the coming days, \u201cToy Story 5\u2033 will register as the highest-grossing installment in the beloved franchise, overtaking 2019\u2019s \u201cToy Story 4\u2033 ($1.07 billion). It\u2019s the third \u201cToy Story\u201d sequel to cross $1 billion after 2010\u2019s \u201cToy Story 3\u2033 ($1.06 billion).<\/p>\n

\n\tDirected by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, the fifth installment follows Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the gang of anthropomorphic toys as their owner Bonnie becomes addicted to her new favorite gadget, a kiddie smart tablet known as Lilypad. \u201cToy Story 5\u2033 opened in mid-June to $160 million, marking the biggest debut of the year as well as the best start in the series. With glowing reviews, positive word-of-mouth and general goodwill toward the 31-year-old property, \u201cToy Story 5\u2033 remained the de facto choice for family audiences through the busy summer season. It didn\u2019t hurt that Taylor Swift, whose wedding to Travis Kelce was among the buzziest news of the summer, wrote a new song, \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You,\u201d for the soundtrack.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmid the outsized success of \u201cToy Story 5,\u201d Pixar Animation Studios was hit last week<\/a> by layoffs at Disney. Although animated sequels have majorly rebounded at the box office, original fare remains challenged. Pixar\u2019s other 2026 release was this spring\u2019s new adventure \u201cHoppers,\u201d the story of an animal-loving student who transfers her mind into a robotic beaver so she can talk to other critters. Despite a strong opening weekend, \u201cHoppers\u201d didn\u2019t have the staying power to match the box office heights of prior Pixar greats.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Who says toys are outdated?
