{"id":607071,"date":"2026-07-27T20:51:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T20:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/607071\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T20:51:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T20:51:12","slug":"french-wildfires-present-most-difficult-situation-since-ww2-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/607071\/","title":{"rendered":"French wildfires present \u2018most difficult situation since WW2\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Firefighters in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/france\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/france\/\">France<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\">Spain<\/a> were racing against the clock to get control of ferocious wildfires that have burned through vast areas of the Mediterranean as another heatwave closes in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">French president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emmanuel-macron\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emmanuel-macron\/\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a> warned that conditions would get tougher as he visited a firefighting operations centre in the hard-hit region of Gironde, where the blaze has caused uncontrollable \u201cfirestorms\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are facing a situation today that is the most difficult we\u2019ve seen, the most difficult since the second World War,\u201d he told emergency responders, noting that the usual August peak of the wildfire season is still to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than 250,000 people have been evacuated in France, where a fire of record size has reached the outer suburbs of the city of Bordeaux, while the largest fire in Spain\u2019s history has forced over 90,000 people from their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The national weather agencies of both countries warned a heatwave expected to bring temperatures as high as 42 degrees  later this week would hinder firefighting efforts and make the risk of new blazes extremely high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2026\/07\/27\/why-europes-wildfires-are-proving-so-fierce-and-difficult-to-stop\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Why Europe\u2019s wildfires are proving so fierce and difficult to stopOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere are difficult hours ahead,\u201d Spanish prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pedro-sanchez\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pedro-sanchez\/\">Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/a> said in a visit to a firefighting command centre, saying  the priority was to save lives and protect population centres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\">climate emergency<\/a> and the systematic increase in temperatures we are seeing each year are exponentially increasing the extent and intensity of the wildfires,\u201d S\u00e1nchez said. \u201cIt is no longer an exception.
