A MASS SHOOTING near the Space Needle landmark in Seattle killed three people yesterday and wounded at least four others, including a toddler, according to the police.<\/p>\n
Seattle Police said one suspect has been arrested and they are searching for another following the incident at a food festival in a popular tourist district of the northwestern US city.<\/p>\n
Assistant Police Chief Tyrone Davis said shots were heard around 6pm (1am Irish time) and \u201cthere were two people who we believe were shooting at each other.\u201d Two weapons were recovered.<\/p>\n
There is \u201cno outstanding threat to the community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Seattle Police said three people had died.<\/p>\n
Police said on X earlier Sunday there were \u201cmultiple shooting victims\u201d after shots were fired at the Seattle Center.<\/p>\n
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson said State Patrol SWAT officers had been deployed to assist local police.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy prayers are with the families of the victims, and the responders as they work to keep people safe,\u201d he said on X.<\/p>\n
Mayor Katie Wilson said the shooting was \u201can act of horrific violence.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOur attention belongs to the people whose lives were taken, those fighting to recover, and the families beside them,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n
She also expressed her thanks to \u201cthe Seattle police officers who responded to the scene and took a suspect into custody.\u201d<\/p>\n
Four patients were being treated at the trauma centre facility at Harborview Medical Center, according to spokesperson Susan Gregg: a child, a woman of unknown age who was in surgery, a 23-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman.<\/p>\n
Davis said those in the hospital were in a \u201cstable condition.\u201d<\/p>\n
Several witnesses told Seattle television station KIRO they heard multiple shots before running away.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt first, I thought there were fireworks, and then everybody flooded and ran past us,\u201d Nick Bate told the station.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe started running. I didn\u2019t know. I didn\u2019t look where the person was going. I just heard everything,\u201d a witness told AFP.<\/p>\n
The shooting took place during the \u201cBite of Seattle\u201d summer festival celebrating local businesses and food vendors.<\/p>\n
