{"id":60750,"date":"2025-09-13T02:17:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T02:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/60750\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T02:17:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T02:17:10","slug":"fingal-council-votes-not-to-endorse-any-candidate-for-presidential-election-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/60750\/","title":{"rendered":"Fingal council votes not to endorse any candidate for presidential election \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fingal-county-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fingal-county-council\/\">Fingal County Council<\/a> has voted by a large margin not to endorse any candidate for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/presidential-election\/\">presidential election<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The council rejected a resolution on Friday night to give a nomination to entrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gareth-sheridan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gareth-sheridan\/\">Gareth Sheridan<\/a> by 18 votes to seven, with five abstentions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Sheridan had earlier won a preliminary vote against conservative commentator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/maria-steen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/maria-steen\/\">Maria Steen<\/a> after both had addressed the council. Seven councillors voted in favour of Mr Sheridan with four voting for Ms Steen. There were 19 abstentions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Sheridan was supported by a number of Independent councillors, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aontu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aontu\/\">Aont\u00fa<\/a> and two Independents backing Ms Steen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\">Fine Gael<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/labour-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/labour-party\/\">Labour<\/a> councillors voted against the resolution in a bloc, with members of other parties also opposing the nomination or abstaining. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Fingal has become the third of the 31 local authorities to decide not to endorse a candidate after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mayo-county-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mayo-county-council\/\">Mayo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/09\/08\/dun-laoghaire-rathdown-councillors-vote-not-to-nominate-presidential-candidate\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/09\/08\/dun-laoghaire-rathdown-councillors-vote-not-to-nominate-presidential-candidate\/\">D\u00fan Laoghaire-Rathdown<\/a> councils also decided to refrain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A person who is formally nominated by four councils is entitled to be a candidate in the election. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Sheridan (36) told councillors in his submission that Fingal could make history by nominating the youngest candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said he wanted to give voters a wider choice of candidate \u201cbeyond the long list of politicians serving and retiring in Leinster House\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It would be wrong not to widen the choice that voters have on October 24th, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Sheridan said Fianna F\u00e1il candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\">Jim Gavin<\/a> had no political experience but brought an exceptional life experience as did he. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/08\/30\/jim-gavin-profile-is-former-dublin-gaa-manager-a-good-fit-for-president\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Gavin profile: Would \u2018no bullsh*t\u2019 former Dublin manager make a good president?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking of Nutriband, the healthcare company he founded, he said: \u201cI did not get cheered on in Croke Park but I took a college idea which ended up ringing the bell of the Nasdaq [stock exchange] in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">From Terenure in Dublin, Mr Sheridan said he wanted to represent a generation of Irish people who could not afford to own their own home, and were forced to rent or live with their parents, or emigrate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Steen told councillors people disagreed with some of her views but referred to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/09\/08\/fintan-otoole-what-the-presidential-election-needs-is-a-candidate-i-wouldnt-dream-of-voting-for-maria-steen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/09\/08\/fintan-otoole-what-the-presidential-election-needs-is-a-candidate-i-wouldnt-dream-of-voting-for-maria-steen\/\">Irish Times column by Fintan O\u2019Toole<\/a> where he had written that she had generally conducted herself politely and treated opponents with civility. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI do not believe in ad hominem attack and saying unkind things in the heat of the debate,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Iona Institute spokeswoman Maria Steen. Photograph: Sam Boal\/Collins Photos  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Steen said she had \u201cno aspiration to conduct my own foreign policy from the Phoenix Park\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Accepting she was on the losing side of the two referendums (marriage equality and abortion), she said so too was Fine Gael presidential candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heather-humphreys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heather-humphreys\/\">Heather Humphreys<\/a>. She pointed out that Ms Humphreys had been the Fine Gael director of elections for the family and care referendums.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/09\/02\/heather-humphreys-no-stranger-to-media-criticism-or-controversy-but-a-popular-fine-gael-matriarch-with-broad-appeal\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Humphreys profile: Popular Fine Gael matriarch is no stranger to controversy but has broad appealOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Steen criticised the decision by Simon Harris to direct Fine Gael councillors to vote against nominations at local authority level, describing it as undemocratic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In respect of her conservative views Ms Steen said that people might not agree with her. \u201cYou know my values. You know what I stand for. I am exactly what I look like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In relation to social issues, she said she had worked with \u201cwonderful women\u201d during the course of the 2024 family and care referendums who were on \u201cthe other side of the abortion debate in 2018\u2033.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis was an opportunity for healing,\u201d she said, saying the result of the referendum was a landmark moment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">More than 30 members of the 40-member council asked questions with many focusing on Ms Steen\u2019s views on same-sex marriage, abortion, divorce, assisted dying and surrogacy.
