{"id":608865,"date":"2026-07-28T21:20:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T21:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/608865\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T21:20:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T21:20:14","slug":"heres-how-pog-mo-thoin-became-phrase-of-the-year-on-this-season-of-love-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/608865\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s how &#8216;p\u00f3g mo th\u00f3in&#8217; became phrase of the year on this season of Love Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THERE WERE THREE Irish contestants on Love Island this year, but it took a Polish woman to bring the phrase \u201cp\u00f3g mo th\u00f3in\u201d to the UK mainstream.<\/p>\n<p>The final episode of a Love Island season that was rich with Irish participation aired last night, bringing the season to a close \u2013 but not without another hark back to \u201cp\u00f3g mo th\u00f3in\u201d, which had been thrown around the villa on several occasions over the last month, much to the amusement of Irish viewers.<\/p>\n<p>The term, as every Irish schoolchild gleefully learns in the playground, means \u201ckiss my ass\u201d as Gaeilge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So how did an Irish phrase become a key plot point of a British reality TV show about would-be influencers finding love in a Spanish villa?<\/p>\n<p>The key was Julia, the show\u2019s first eastern European contestant who went on to win the show last night with her partner Lorenzo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1785273614_917_.jpeg\"  alt=\"Julia\" class=\"alignnone inline-image\" \/><br \/>\n            Julia Majchrzak entered the show during a stage that&#8217;s known as &#8216;Casa Amor&#8217;.                    ITV<\/p>\n<p>    ITV\n<\/p>\n<p>Julia entered the show about halfway through during what\u2019s known as \u2018Casa Amor\u2019. The existing couples of men and women are split up and sent to separate villas, where six new male and six new female \u2018bombshells\u2019 are sent in to the respective villas to test the existing partnerships.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During Casa Amor, Julia had several conversations with Ireland\u2019s own Se\u00e1n Fitzgerald, or Fitzy, as he was known on the show.<\/p>\n<p>The Galway GAA player generated a lot of buzz on this side of the Irish Sea when it was announced that he\u2019d be in the starting cast line-up \u2013 not least because of a pre-show video in which he pitches himself to the producers going viral.<\/p>\n<p>(The buzz around Se\u00e1n was helped by widespread speculation before the show aired that Irish influencer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/charleenmurphy\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charleen Murphy<\/a> would be on the show this year. The Dubliner ultimately made an appearance as a \u2018Casa girl\u2019 alongside Julia. The trio of Irish contestants was completed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/victoriaonanusi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victoria Onanusi<\/a> from Kildare, who entered the show on the fifth day of week one, but unfortunately was knocked out five days later.)<\/p>\n<p>Despite Julia\u2019s advances, at the end of the \u2018Casa Amor\u2019 phase of the show, Se\u00e1n chose to return to his original partner, Lola \u2013 who wasn\u2019t best pleased with Julia.<\/p>\n<p>Lola took umbrage with Julia\u2019s attention to Se\u00e1n and it culminated in an argument in which Julia told Lola: \u201cP\u00f3g mo th\u00f3in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lola \u2013 who\u2019s from Kent in England \u2013 thought Julia was swearing at her in Polish as a flustered Se\u00e1n tried to stop Julia from repeating the Irish phrase \u2013 now, who on earth could Julia have learned that from?<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">Sean Fitzy teaching Julia \u201cP\u00f3g mo th\u00f3in\u201d in Casa Amor and her saying it directly to LOLA hahahaha I am howling. In the penultimate episode, with just five couples remaining, all of the contestants from the season who had previously been dumped were invited back with the task of voting for one couple that should be knocked out ahead of the final. Our Irish contestants \u2013 Charleen, Victoria, and of course, Se\u00e1n \u2013 all made their return to the villa on Sunday night\u2019s episode for the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Julia and Lorenzo came out pretty well, with only two votes cast against them. Those were, as you might guess, from Lola and Se\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<p>After Se\u00e1n voted for Julia and Lorenzo to be eliminated, Julia stared him down with a mischievious twinkle in her eye and said: \u201cIf there\u2019s anything I\u2019d like to say to you, Se\u00e1n, it\u2019s\u2026 p\u00f3g mo th\u00f3in.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p lang=\"fi\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"fi\">Julia hitting Sean with P\u00f3g mo th\u00f3in (kiss my arse) was top-tier banter\ud83d\ude2d\ud83d\ude02<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/loveisland?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">#loveisland<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/loveislanduk?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">#loveislanduk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Yp3vZ1HFOY\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/Yp3vZ1HFOY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 VD \ud83c\udf39 (@Mister_Hammed) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Mister_Hammed\/status\/2081483724017840321?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">July 26, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A day later, Julia and Lorenzo won the whole show in the public vote, but not before she got in one last playful \u201cp\u00f3g mo th\u00f3in\u201d to Se\u00e1n and Lola during her final interview with host Maya Jama \u2013 but also saying that she wishes them all the best.<\/p>\n<p>Most people go on Love Island to gain social media followers, chase brand deals, or maybe even in the hope of finding a real romantic connection.
