{"id":609428,"date":"2026-07-29T05:18:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T05:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/609428\/"},"modified":"2026-07-29T05:18:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T05:18:17","slug":"mayo-performance-coach-reveals-all-ireland-heartbreak-was-barely-addressed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/609428\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayo performance coach reveals All-Ireland heartbreak was barely addressed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All-Ireland SFC  <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/sport\/gaa\/arid-41886211.html\">winners<\/a> Mayo\u2019s performance coach Rachel Sheehan says the county\u2019s record of losing finals was hardly addressed in her work with the group.<\/p>\n<p>The Limerick native, who has a doctorate in sports psychology from UL and has been assisting Kerry\u2019s senior ladies football team to a lesser degree, rarely spoke of previous disappointments as so many of the group had not experienced final heartache before such as the previous defeat to Tyrone in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOnly a very small cohort maybe carried some of that baggage,\u201d Sheehan  <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/radio\/podcasts\/22633219-mayo-magic-and-the-psychologist-behind-the-team\/\">told<\/a> RT\u00c9\u2019s  Behind The Story podcast. \u201cFor the most part, it\u2019s a new team, it\u2019s a new year and even for myself I know that stuff (Mayo\u2019s final history) but that\u2019s not engrained in my background either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSo, at the start of the year, you come in with a blank slate and the only time we really look back is at the previous week or the previous match in order to reflect and look forward for the next week, the next match.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe certainly didn\u2019t start this year by reflecting on five years\u2019 past, on 10 years\u2019 past or 75 years\u2019 past. It\u2019s something that might have come up once or twice, but it definitely wasn\u2019t active in any of our conversations this year.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sheehan came in for a lot of praise from captain Jack Coyne in his acceptance speech and Ryan O\u2019Donoghue. She previously worked with the Dublin and Galway senior hurlers under Niall \u00d3 Ceallach\u00e1in and Henry Shefflin respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She conducted about a dozen group sessions with the Mayo panel over the season. Some of those involved only the players. Based in Nenagh, she would have travelled to Mayo to meet with players and management at least twice a week but would have conducted a lot of remote calls with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019m really strong on building relationships with the lads and trying to make sure there\u2019s that caring approach right from the get-go,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019d be very big on doing one-to-ones. Most of that is done remotely. Geography isn\u2019t a barrier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cLads wouldn\u2019t really want to be doing one-to-ones before training so I would do those from home in Nenagh via videocall and I could have a handful of them every single week going back as far as October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;They cover anything from college, partners, furniture shopping, renovations.
