{"id":60965,"date":"2025-09-13T04:40:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T04:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/60965\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T04:40:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T04:40:07","slug":"derry-pensioner-sentenced-for-defrauding-credit-union-members-of-more-than-300000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/60965\/","title":{"rendered":"Derry pensioner sentenced for defrauding Credit Union members of more than \u00a3300,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An 80-year-old man from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.derrynow.com\/section\/2719\/crime-court\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Derry<\/a> has been sentenced at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.derrynow.com\/section\/2719\/crime-court\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dungannon Crown Court<\/a> today (Friday, September 12) for defrauding members of a Credit Union in County Tyrone of, it\u2019s estimated to be more than \u00a3300,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Andrew\u00a0Deans, from the Waterside area, pleaded guilty to Fraud by Abuse of Position and Theft on September 26 2024 and today, he was given a two year sentence, half to be served in custody and half on licence.<\/p>\n<p>The complex investigation into\u00a0Deans\u2019 offending was led by the Police Service of Northern Ireland\u2019s Criminal Investigation Department.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns were raised by a shareholder of North Tyrone Credit Union who discovered a significant sum of money had been withdrawn from their account by\u00a0Deans\u00a0without their knowledge or permission. Many of\u00a0Deans\u2019 victims were aged over 70 and the money he stole from them was their long-term savings.<\/p>\n<p>Deans\u00a0was arrested by police in July 2023 and charged with offences in January 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Criminal Investigation Department Detective Inspector Gordon Hanbidge said: \u201cDeans\u00a0knew many of his victims personally. In many cases, he was friends with them for over 20 years, some for even longer, and he used several methods to defraud them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen shareholders gave him money to lodge into their accounts, he kept it, never recording it officially on the Credit Union system. He withdrew money from shareholders&#8217; accounts without their permission, forging signatures and using fraudulent documentation. He took out loans in shareholders\u2019 names without their knowledge or permission. He was able to take most of the withdrawals and loans in cash and also move the money between shareholders\u2019 accounts to attempt to hide missing funds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeans\u00a0was trusted implicitly to safeguard money shareholders\u2019 gave him. He saw no wrong in his actions. He abused his position &#8211; as a friend and in his trusted role within the Credit Union &#8211; to betray his victims in the most despicable and calculating way. His actions were beyond brazen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The victims have all got their money back, which is at last of some comfort and relief for them. But it should never have happened in the first place, and\u00a0Deans\u2019 actions have caused immeasurable hurt to the Credit Union and to the shareholders impacted. Trust was used and abused, which is reprehensible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of the shareholders impacted, and who knew\u00a0Deans\u00a0for more than 20 years, described him as \u2018the ultimate conman\u2019 with \u2018no moral compass\u2019, and \u2018who stole for greed, not need\u2019. She said \u201cformer close friends, including ourselves, were hard working class people who paid into pension schemes to be able to enjoy retirement\u201d. She said \u2018the hurt and betrayal\u2019 by\u00a0Deans\u00a0\u201ccannot be underestimated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Inspector Hanbidge added:\u00a0\u201cI want to thank the victims for their patience, dignity and co-operation with what has been a complex investigation.
