However, the volatile numbers come on the back of a surge in exports last year as pharma firms here rushed to stockpile products in the US before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Still, Irish gross domestic product (GDP) \u2013 the total value of goods and services produced in the economy \u2013 increased by 3.9 per cent between the first and second quarter of the year, according to the CSO data, which will be subject to revision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It meant that on an annual basis, GDP had contracted by an estimated 1.6 per cent compared with the 13 per cent decline observed in the 12 months to the end of March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cLooking ahead, geopolitics is likely to dominate [GDP data] in the short to medium term,\u201d said Aaron Bright, an investment analyst at IG. \u201cA June ceasefire briefly reopened the Strait of Hormuz and cooled oil prices, but July\u2019s renewed US-Iran clashes have sent Brent oil prices upwards again.
