If there\u2019s a hard road, chances are actress Monica Barbaro<\/strong><\/a> is going to take it. \u201cI was told a story about myself as a child; my family, we were going on a hike and for some reason, every time there was a boulder, I would walk over it as opposed to going around it,\u201d Barbaro tells Seen on the Screen<\/a> host Jacqueline Coley. \u201cIt sounds really stupid, but it is a very good way of describing how I tackle life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Case in point: In her upcoming movie, One Night Only<\/strong>,<\/a> Barbaro chose to do all her own stunts, so to speak \u2014 which, in the case of her character Allie, meant actually singing, playing the piano, and, in one particular scene, serenading onlookers in a crowd. \u201cIt\u2019s a very scary thing,\u201d Barbaro says of the scene.<\/p>\n

For fans of the Top Gun: Maverick<\/a> star, who most recently played folk singer Joan Baez in the 2024 movie A Complete Unknown<\/a>, the actress\u2019s vocal chops won\u2019t come as much of a surprise, and the same can be said for her co-star, Callum Turner<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cShe\u2019s so committed to that part; and she\u2019s got a beautiful voice,\u201d Turner adds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In One Night Only,\u00a0 Barbaro and Turner play Allie and Owen, two singles in the seemingly near future who meet on the one night of the year that pre-marital sex is legal. It\u2019s a fresh take on the epidemic of single people, and an unexpected premise from romantic comedy director Will Gluck<\/a>, the mind behind 2010\u2019s Easy A<\/a>, 2023\u2019s Anyone But You<\/a>, and 2011\u2019s \u00a0Friends with Benefits<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Integral to Gluck\u2019s story and the film is the chemistry between Barbaro and Turner, whose characters spend much of the movie in opposition. \u201c<\/strong>They\u2019re not after each other, so there\u2019s a freedom,\u201d Turner says. \u201cThey\u2019re not looking at each other thinking,\u2018This is the person.\u2019 They\u2019re actually on different quests. And when they find each other, they\u2019re not interested in the other person, and that allows you the freedom to expose who you really are to the other person.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Turner, the key to this chemistry on screen was the bonding the actors did off, spending two weeks together rehearsing. \u201c<\/strong>We also just inherently trusted each other as actors,\u201d Barbaro adds, \u201cso knew we were showing up with a certain level of safety, and then knowing Will understands comedy so well.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s this chemistry that will draw viewers \u2014 both fans and non-fans of rom-coms alike \u2014 to the theater. Which is what both Turner and Barbaro are hoping for. Speaking to a recent Fandango survey<\/a> that showed younger generations, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, are driving theatrical momentum, Turner noted how beautiful this shift is. \u201cIt\u2019s so funny how, not that [cinema] lost its way, but it\u2019s found a new audience through not wanting to be on the phones or an escape from that, a space that\u2019s safe for them to concentrate on one thing,\u201d Turner says, \u201crather than the whole constant barrage of attack on your senses.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a feeling the actors themselves can relate to, just how special it is to see a movie in theaters. \u201cI remember seeing Wedding Crashers<\/a> in theaters,\u201d Barbaro says. \u201cI remember seeing all kinds of comedies and having that really land and feeling buzzy, going home like, \u2018That was a really fun time.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Meaning moviegoers should see One Night Only the way it was truly meant to be \u2014 on the big screen. \u201cFor One Night Only, you will only have the experience of sitting in the room, surrounded by people, witnessing it for the first time,\u201d Barbaro adds. Just don\u2019t expect Turner to sing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
