When people ask me if I can sing (which comes up sometimes as I\u2019m a performer by trade), my response is \u201cI can carry a tune.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an answer I\u2019m comfortable with, because I know I CAN sing, but by the same token I know a lot of true, capital S Singers and I wouldn\u2019t dare put myself in their category.<\/p>\n

That said, even I\u2019d probably get annoyed if those capital S Singers were capital S Singing *all the time.*<\/p>\n

I (F20) have been dating my girlfriend, let\u2019s call her Angie (F21), for about nine months now, and I genuinely adore her.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s kind, smart, funny, and just overall a wonderful person.<\/p>\n

I really do feel lucky to have her in my life.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Here comes the but. Or rather, the \u201cthat said.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

That said\u2026 she loves to sing.<\/p>\n

Like, all the time, but especially in the car.<\/p>\n

And to be clear, she\u2019s incredibly talented.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s done choir throughout school, she\u2019s a musical theatre major, and she truly has an amazing voice.<\/p>\n

Most of the time, I love hearing her sing and perform.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s something I admire about her cause god know I cant hold a tune to save my life.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And here comes the other but. Or rather, the \u201chowever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

However, when we\u2019re driving together, it honestly gets on my nerves.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t mean every now and then, it\u2019s constant.<\/p>\n

For example, the other night we were driving home from a mutual friend\u2019s place.<\/p>\n

I put on some music in the background and started talking asking her about her day.<\/p>\n

As soon as there was a lull in the conversation, she turned the music up and started singing.<\/p>\n

I let it go for a song or two, but when turned it back down and tried to resume the conversation, she gave me a one-word answer, turned it up and went right back to singing.<\/p>\n

This kind of thing happens all the time.<\/p>\n

I try not to be overly sensitive about it, but it makes me feel like she\u2019s not interested in talking to me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It gets a little insulting too.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve brought it up a couple of times, but she usually brushes it off and tells me that it just passes the time, which it does, for her\u2026meanwhile I\u2019m driving next to what feels like a brick wall.<\/p>\n

Sometimes I try to sing along, but she\u2019ll say something like \u201cIt\u2019s not a duet\u201d in a joking way but I know she means it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

What is she to do?<\/p>\n

I really do love her, and I don\u2019t want to make her feel like she can\u2019t be herself around me but I also don\u2019t want to feel ignored every time we\u2019re in the car together.<\/p>\n

So am I the [jerk] for wanting her to dial it back a bit in the car?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The comments pondered it out. Some, of course, came out swinging:<\/p>\n

Swap out singing for some other talent and the problem becomes clear.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a pretty good improv comedian, if I do say so myself. But if I spent entire car rides asking for location suggestions and improvising monologues, I\u2019d be rightfully ejected from the car.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a time and a place, ma\u2019am.<\/p>\n
