{"id":611447,"date":"2026-07-30T10:01:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T10:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/611447\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T10:01:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T10:01:12","slug":"mubi-to-release-la-mesias-from-la-bola-negra-directors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/611447\/","title":{"rendered":"Mubi to Release &#8216;La Mes\u00edas,&#8217; from &#8216;La Bola Negra&#8217; Directors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cLa Mes\u00edas,\u201d the multi-prized series created by <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/javier-ambrossi\/\" id=\"auto-tag_javier-ambrossi\" data-tag=\"javier-ambrossi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Javier Ambrossi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/javier-calvo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_javier-calvo\" data-tag=\"javier-calvo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Javier Calvo<\/a>, behind the Cannes best-director winning \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/la-bola-negra\/\" id=\"auto-tag_la-bola-negra\" data-tag=\"la-bola-negra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">La bola negra<\/a>,\u201d will be released by <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/mubi\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mubi\" data-tag=\"mubi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mubi<\/a> in U.K., Canada, Turkey, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria and Australia, streaming exclusively from Sept. 3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/movistar-plus\/\" id=\"auto-tag_movistar-plus\" data-tag=\"movistar-plus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Movistar Plus<\/a> Original, produced in collaboration with Ambrossi and Calvo\u2019s\u00a0 label Suma Content, \u201cLa Mes\u00edas\u201d will also stream on Mubi in France, Mubi announced Thursday. The deal was closed with Movistar Plus International. Mubi will launch with a two-episode premiere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA step-up from \u201cVeneno,\u201d which made a splash on HBO in the U.S., six-part series \u201cLa Mes\u00edas\u201d delivered a example of the full-on ambition of Los Javis, as Ambrossi and Calvo are known in Spain, which was seen again in \u201cLa bola negra,\u201d one of the highest-profile Cannes main competition contenders which sparked rave reviews, and a bidding war for the U.S. rights. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cLa Mes\u00edas,\u201d Los Javis\u2019 title just prior to \u201cLa bola negra,\u201d begins with thirtysomething loner Enric watching a viral video of Stella Maris, a Christian pop band. His reaction? He literally wets himself. For the singers are his younger sisters. Memories flood back of his own childhood and youth, traumatized by his parents\u2019 religious fanaticism which climaxes in mother Montse declaring herself the daughter of God, and that the words her daughters sing are dictated to her by God and part of her mission to save humanity via music.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEnric escaped. He now determines to save his sisters. Action flashes back and forward from a present-day 2013 to the 1980s when Enric and slightly younger sister Irene are kids, to around 1997, catching them in their late teens. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe production shot for 25 weeks totally on location, mostly at 30 rural sites outside Barcelona. The series featured 170 characters and 3,800 extras. 1980s flashbacks are sometimes lensed in 16 mm, capturing the impressionism of memory. The series genre hops: Episode 1 blends psychodrama and sci-fi, for example. Ep. 2 has a procedural pulse; Episode 3 works like a real-life musical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor all its style, the series delivers a powerful sense of the importance of family education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTo mark Mubi\u2019s release announcement, it has shared with Variety a new international trailer, which captures Enric (Roger Casamayor, \u201cPan\u2019s Labyrinth\u201d) as he seeks out sister Irene (Macarena Garc\u00eda), literally scarred by the past, to help him rescue his sisters, plus the presentation of an early video, \u201clyrics by God,\u201d says one little sister, and later bizarre Christian pop rap, created by Spanish underground duo Carlos Ballesteros and Gen\u00eds Segarra. Rosal\u00eda producer Ra\u00fcl Refree composed the series\u2019 original soundtrack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMessianic matriarch Montse is played at different ages by Ana Rujas (\u201cCardo\u201d), Cannes best actress winner Lola Due\u00f1as (\u201cVolver,\u201d \u201cLa bola negra\u201d) and Carmen Machi, star of Series Mania winner \u201cCeleste.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult to unlearn what you\u2019ve been taught \u2013 I\u2019m talking about education \u2013 the past resounds in your body for ever. That touches me in many ways. As a son, a member of the LGBT collective. The series talks about religion, but as a form of education and this is what makes it interesting,\u201d Javier Calvo said on a Variety set visit to the isolated family house, hidden in wooded mountains south of Barcelona.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cLa Mes\u00edas\u201d world premiered at San Sebasti\u00e1n Festival in 2023, where it gleaned glowing reviews.
