{"id":611712,"date":"2026-07-30T13:35:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T13:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/611712\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T13:35:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T13:35:17","slug":"mercury-prize-2026-irish-artist-dove-ellis-shortlisted-alongside-paul-mccartney-raye-and-more-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/611712\/","title":{"rendered":"Mercury Prize 2026: Irish artist Dove Ellis shortlisted alongside Paul McCartney, Raye and more \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish singer-songwriter Dove Ellis has been shortlisted for the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mercury-prize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mercury-prize\/\">Mercury Prize<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The musician, nominated for his album <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2025\/12\/19\/dove-ellis-blizzard-review-thank-heavens-for-awkward-outsiders-and-for-this-luminescent-irish-album\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2025\/12\/19\/dove-ellis-blizzard-review-thank-heavens-for-awkward-outsiders-and-for-this-luminescent-irish-album\/\">Blizzard<\/a>, features on the shortlist alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paul-mccartney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paul-mccartney\/\">Paul McCartney<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/olivia-dean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/olivia-dean\/\">Olivia Dean<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/raye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/raye\/\">Raye<\/a> and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The prize, created in 1992, is awarded each year to the best album by an artist from the UK or Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dove Ellis, who hails from Galway, released his debut album on the back of supporting Geese, the American indie band of the moment, around the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In his five-star review of Blizzard in The Irish Times, Ed Power described the album as \u201curgent and stubborn, full of sharp edges and illuminated throughout by a refusal to compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The other nominated albums include Dean\u2019s The Art Of Loving, which won album of the year at the Brit Awards, and McCartney\u2019s latest work, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2026\/05\/29\/paul-mccartney-the-boys-of-dungeon-lane-review-like-a-highlight-reel-of-the-beatles-adventures-in-rock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2026\/05\/29\/paul-mccartney-the-boys-of-dungeon-lane-review-like-a-highlight-reel-of-the-beatles-adventures-in-rock\/\">The Boys Of Dungeon Lane<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Beatles star\u2019s album recounts memories from his formative years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 14-track record was named after a place close to his childhood home in Forthlin Road in the Liverpool suburb of Speke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Released at the end of May, it was McCartney\u2019s first album in five years and reached number one on the UK album charts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Also on the shortlist are Raye\u2019s This Music May Contain Hope, Dave\u2019s The Boy Who Played The Harp, Florence + the Machine\u2019s Everybody Scream and Knats\u2019 A Great Day In Newcastle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The list is completed by Kojey Radical\u2019s Don\u2019t Look Down, Former Little Mix star Jade with That\u2019s Showbiz Baby!, Nia Archives for Emotional Junglist, Suede with Antidepressants and War Child Records with HELP(2).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Albums are nominated based on musical merit, irrespective of how successful the record or act have been in the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The event will feature live performances from many of the nominated artists before the winner is announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Mercury Prize ceremony will be held on Thursday October 22nd at the Utilita Arena Newcastle. The event was also held in Newcastle in 2025, its first year outside London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sam Fender won last year\u2019s prize for his album People Watching.
