{"id":612582,"date":"2026-07-31T00:20:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T00:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/612582\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T00:20:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T00:20:12","slug":"dublins-portland-row-sports-pitch-saved-as-housing-development-refused-after-local-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/612582\/","title":{"rendered":"Dublin&#8217;s Portland Row sports pitch saved as housing development refused after local campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PLANS FOR A 49-home development in Dublin\u2019s north inner city have been refused by An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la, preserving a long-standing community sports pitch that residents, politicians and Olympic champion Kellie Harrington had fought to save.<\/p>\n<p>The planning appeals body overturned Dublin City Council\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/portland-row-housing-6894370-Dec2025\/?jrnl_lg=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decision to grant permission for the scheme at Portland Row<\/a>, which would have seen the removal of the Mixed Use Games Area at nearby Aldborough Place.<\/p>\n<p>In its decision, An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la said while the proposed development was a \u201chigh quality and coherent urban scheme\u201d, the applicant had failed to demonstrate there was \u201cno long term need\u201d for the existing sports facility or that it would be replaced by an equivalent facility in a suitable location.<\/p>\n<p>It found the loss of the play area would materially contravene Dublin City Development Plan policy protecting existing sports and recreational facilities and would be \u201ccontrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed development, by Dublin City Council and Tuath Housing Association, comprised 49 homes across three residential blocks on a site at Portland Row.<\/p>\n<p>The plans prompted significant local opposition when they were approved by the council last December, with 36 third-party submissions lodged.<\/p>\n<p>While many welcomed the provision of new housing, they argued it should not come at the expense of one of the area\u2019s few recreational facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Among those who appealed the decision were two-time Olympic gold medallist Kellie Harrington and local residents.<\/p>\n<p>Welcoming the decision today, Sinn F\u00e9in leader and Dublin Central TD Mary Lou McDonald described it as \u201ca huge victory for the local community and for common sense\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need housing and community facilities side by side.
