{"id":613575,"date":"2026-07-31T14:45:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T14:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/613575\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T14:45:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T14:45:15","slug":"indie-venue-of-the-month-july-2026-the-belly-up-in-san-diego","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/613575\/","title":{"rendered":"Indie Venue of the Month July 2026: The Belly Up in San Diego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor four full months in 2015, the head honchos at Solana Beach, Calif., club The Belly Up were forced to keep a big secret: <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/the-rolling-stones\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/the-rolling-stones\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Rolling Stones<\/a> would soon be playing the 600-capacity venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe made a vow within the [those] of us who knew that we\u2019re not telling our spouses, we\u2019re not telling anyone until the week of the show, and we stuck to that,\u201d says Belly Up Entertainment president <strong>Chris Goldsmith<\/strong>, who held the secret alongside The Belly Up owners <strong>Steve Goldberg<\/strong> and <strong>Phil Berkovitz<\/strong>. What Goldsmith did do was tell his wife to save the date for what would go down as one of the legendary band\u2019s most exclusive gigs on that tour. \u201cI think [my wife] appreciated not having to try and keep that a secret herself for four months,\u201d he says. \u201cI did her a favor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRelated\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/indie-venue-of-the-month-june-2026-cains-ballroom-tulsa\/\" class=\"c-lazy-image__link lrv-a-unstyle-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2282389779-e1782837034133.jpg\" alt=\"Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe gig was scheduled for May 27, 2015, at the beginning of the Stones\u2019 Zip Code stadium tour \u2014 three days after <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/mick-jagger\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/mick-jagger\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mick Jagger<\/a> and company played to more than 40,000 fans at nearby San Diego\u2019s Petco Park. The underplay was especially under wraps since tickets wouldn\u2019t be sold to the general public; instead, former Hewlett-Packard chairman <strong>Ralph Whitworth<\/strong> had hired the band to play The Belly Up for a private event benefitting immunotherapy cancer research. After news of the private event began to leak the week of, The Belly Up added privacy screens along the chain link fencing behind the venue, \u201cso Mick could do his little jog back and down the alley,\u201d Goldsmith adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn order to play the room, Jagger asked that the stage be extended by four feet \u2014\u00a0and the addition has remained since. \u201cIt worked for the Stones,\u201d says Goldsmith. \u201cIt should work for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-billboard-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Rolling-stones-Belly-Up-2015-bellyupentertainment-billboard-embed.jpg\" alt=\"The Rolling Stones at The Belly Up in 2015\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"640\" width=\"640\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tThe Rolling Stones at The Belly Up in 2015<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCourtesy Belly Up Entertainment<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGoldberg and Berkovitz were happy to accommodate The Stones, as they are with all artists and their teams. It\u2019s an ethos that has been part of The Belly Up since its inception in 1974, when <strong>Dave Hodges<\/strong> and <strong>Greg Gilholm<\/strong> opened the bar in the now-iconic Quonset huts \u2014 arch-style metal structures \u2014 on Cedros Avenue that were formerly a waterbed manufacturing and showroom space. The bar served beer and wine, as well as Polish sausage sandwiches and pickled eggs, to patrons playing ping-pong, pool and board games. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn 1976, the tavern pushed aside some of the ping-pong tables to welcome its first live band, Squatters Last Rights. The success of that first live show encouraged Hodges to build a small stage from scrap material left over from the waterbed warehouse, and he continued to book live acts, especially artists who played blues, jazz and rock\u2019n\u2019roll.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRelated\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/indie-venue-of-the-month-rebel-lounge-phoenix\/\" class=\"c-lazy-image__link lrv-a-unstyle-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Rebel-lounge-marrquee-2026-press-rebel-lounge-cr-Paulann-Egelhoff-billboard-1800.jpg\" alt=\"The Rebel Lounge marquee\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHodges, who passed away earlier this year at 79, \u201cwas definitely a blues lover, and there wasn\u2019t really anybody else doing blues\u201d in San Diego in the \u201870s and \u201880s, says Goldsmith. \u201cHe really wanted a place where he could see the artists that he liked. When they were coming to L.A., he would go after them.\u201d Hodges succeeded in bringing legends including <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/john-lee-hooker\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/john-lee-hooker\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johnny Lee Hooker<\/a>, Big Mama Thornton, Lightnin\u2019 Hopkins, <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/albert-collins\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/albert-collins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Albert Collins<\/a>, <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/junior-wells\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/junior-wells\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Junior Wells<\/a>, <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/buddy-guy\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/buddy-guy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Buddy Guy<\/a> and <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/etta-james\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/etta-james\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Etta James<\/a> to The Belly Up, the latter of whom also requested an addition to the stage \u2014 a small manual lift that she used for many of the subsequent shows she played there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn Goldsmith\u2019s estimation, The Belly Up\u2019s history of snagging bold-faced acts is emblematic of its various owners\u2019 appreciation of the fact that music is a relationship business. In the case of the Stones, the booking only came about because the venue built a years-long relationship with Whitworth. Former talent buyer <strong>Mac Falk<\/strong> also built strong relationships, including with managers like <strong>Carl Stubner<\/strong>, who brought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/mick-fleetwood\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mick Fleetwood<\/a> to The Belly Up on countless occasions. \u201cThere\u2019s two aspects to relationships in the music business,\u201d says Goldsmith. \u201cOne of them is relationships with the artists that are coming through. Take really good care of them. You feed them. You don\u2019t argue with them about their ridiculous rider requests that you don\u2019t understand. You just get it for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe other aspect, he continues, \u201cis good relationships with the agents and with the managers. What that means is not so much a lot of personal conversation with them, but it\u2019s about taking care of the business in a responsible way. If an agent calls you and wants a hold, you give them the hold. If they want an offer, you send the offer in a timely way. They send you a contract, and there\u2019s a due date on the contract? No ticket price and no fee to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Belly Up made one announcement about the impromptu Killers show at 9 p.m. on the radio that night. By 11 p.m., there was a line of roughly 1,000 people at the door. The staff counted off the first 600 people and regretfully informed the rest that the event was full.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThey were having a good experience,\u201d Goldsmith says of why The Killers requested to do an additional set, giving credit to the Belly Up staff for creating a welcoming environment for artists. The band \u201chad already loaded in. They had sound checked. They were in a very positive headspace, and you never know what comes out of those situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe caliber of artists The Belly Up has been able to land is a testament to the scrappy venue\u2019s tenacity in a major city that is not a huge music town. For example, despite having a smaller population than San Diego, San Francisco has more music fans, Goldsmith says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMost people [who] live in San Diego, and especially people who move to San Diego, are here because of something other than music and culture. They\u2019re here for the outdoor lifestyle, the beach in particular,\u201d says Goldsmith, who points to the prevalence of military families due to Camp Pendleton, the nearby Marine Corps base, and the influx of bio science employees working for Pfizer, Dexcom and more. \u201cThe kind of things that drive San Diego on a macro level don\u2019t have a lot to do with art and culture. A lot of art and culture organizations in San Diego have to fight against that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRelated\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/indie-venue-of-the-month-march-2026-lpr-new-york-city\/\" class=\"c-lazy-image__link lrv-a-unstyle-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/LPR-exterior-2026-press-lpr-cr-lpr-billboard-1800.jpg\" alt=\"LPR exterior\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tToday, Belly Up Entertainment promotes roughly 800 shows per year, at both its namesake venue and other local spots including The Music Box, The Observatory North Park, Humphrey\u2019s Concerts by the Bay and The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe company also exclusively operates and books The Sound, a 1,900-capacity venue on the local Del Mar Fairgrounds that opened in 2023. The Sound is owned by the state of California, and Belly Up Entertainment works with Goldenvoice, Live Nation and some local venues to promote shows there, bringing acts like <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/jack-white\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/jack-white\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jack White<\/a>, <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/the-flaming-lips\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/the-flaming-lips\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Flaming Lips<\/a>, <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/modest-mouse\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/modest-mouse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Modest Mouse<\/a>, The Stray Cats and more to the stage. Goldsmith remains in awe of the team (Belly Up GM <strong>Jeff Keeping<\/strong>, lead talent buyer <strong>Pete McDevitt<\/strong>, talent buyer <strong>Chad Waldorf<\/strong> and marketing director and comedy talent buyer <strong>Alejandra Carcam<\/strong>), who manage to juggle various shows and venues. That success, he says, comes from the fact that \u201cwe have a lot more invested in our talent buying, marketing and ticketing operation than a lot of clubs our size.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the warmer months, The Belly Up must deal with competition on a couple of different fronts: a tendency for residents to want to enjoy the outdoors, and nearby spring and summer festivals (The Belly Up has a good relationship with promoter Goldenvoice and often snags a handful of side shows from Coachella, so the event\u2019s infamous radius clause isn\u2019t an issue). Year-round, it must also compete with headlining tours routing to L.A. and the Bay Area, skipping the San Diego region entirely. Rising ticket prices at festivals and concerts at larger venues can also put a damper on business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s hard when entertainers are commanding \u2014 on their own or on the secondary market \u2014 $1,000 for a ticket. That\u2019s somebody\u2019s entertainment budget for the year. Then they don\u2019t go out to see the club shows,\u201d says Goldsmith. \u201cIt has a chilling effect. Festivals too. If you\u2019re going to see Coachella, you\u2019re gonna bypass eight club shows. We battle against that a bit, but the momentum swings back to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGoldsmith believes live entertainment at the club level is still one of the best entertainment values available to people. The Belly Up continues to have free parking, free coat check and neighborhood bar drink prices, and it tries to keep ticket prices as low as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAt the Belly Up, we\u2019ve seen when economic times are harder, there\u2019s a return to value. We tend to do pretty well in those times \u2014 almost better than boom periods,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s not really about making money. It\u2019s about doing something great and fun\u2026and having faith that the money is going to work out.
