Emma Redmond, the head of OpenAI<\/a>\u2019s Irish business, met the Primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin<\/a>, this week in the wake of Pope Leo<\/a>\u2019s first papal encyclical on the subject of artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI).<\/p>\n

Archbishop Martin had invited leaders in public life, technology and business, among other areas to consider the impact of AI on humanity in the wake of the Pope\u2019s publication in May.<\/p>\n

Pope Leo called for AI to be \u201cdisarmed\u201d through robust regulation and limits on its use for warfare, as he warned of the dangers of a technological revolution driven by \u201cthe idolatry of profit\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said \u201copaque algorithms\u201d, controlled by powerful private companies, threaten \u201cnew forms of dehumanisation\u201d and said there was need for urgent action to limit its negative impact.<\/p>\n

Redmond, who travelled to the archbishop\u2019s residence in Armagh<\/a>, said after the meeting that she welcomed his engagement on the issue \u201cand his reflection on how AI can serve human dignity and the common good\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe AI should expand people\u2019s capabilities, not replace human judgment about what matters,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cDiscussions like these are an important part of ensuring the development of AI is informed by a broad and inclusive range of perspectives and always focused on serving people and society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Archbishop Martin said he was grateful the OpenAI executive had agreed to meet \u201cat this time when humanity stands at a \u2018historic crossroads\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the discussions had been fruitful \u201cespecially in the context of the onus and responsibilities held by governments, companies and citizens in the ethical shaping of artificial intelligence on the island of Ireland, and universally\u201d. <\/p>\n
