\n\tOn Wednesday (July 29), the seven members of BTS<\/a> posted to their individual Instagram accounts a short, identical and pointedly undramatic statement<\/a>: They will not submit their music<\/a> for consideration at the upcoming 69th Grammy Awards<\/a>. They shared their hope that \u201cmusic can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language.\u201d No category was named and there was no mention of past Grammy experiences. BTS\u2019 management company HYBE later clarified that this is \u201cnot a company-wide boycott\u201d and neither the group nor the label asked anyone else to follow.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe restraint is telling as BTS have long expressed their admiration and respect for the Grammys as an institution. This is not an artist reacting to a snub, but rather BTS recognizing the importance of making a statement before history repeats itself.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn July 2019, the MTV Video Music Awards announced a new category, best K-pop<\/a>, arriving after a period during which BTS had rewritten YouTube\u2019s record books without a single nomination to show for it. At that point, BTS had already broken the record for the most-watched music video within 24 hours on the platform, with \u201cIDOL\u201d garnering 45.9 million views in August 2018, and it went on to become the fastest music video that year to surpass 100 million views on YouTube. Those stats put BTS squarely alongside artists like Eminem<\/a>, Taylor Swift<\/a> and Ariana Grande<\/a>, all of whom already had multiple wins at the VMAs in long-standing categories like video of the year for both Em and Swift, while Grande had two wins for best pop video.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen BTS\u2019 recognition finally came, it arrived in a new category \u2014 one many saw as being built specifically to hold them. Of course, BTS won the award for best K-pop for their \u201cBoy With Luv\u201d music video featuring Halsey<\/a> (which also rewrote the 24-hour YouTube record with 74.6 million views in a day), as well as the fan-voted best group category. What they did not receive was a nod in any of the ceremony\u2019s long-running marquee races. How they could corral the most excitement and attention for any music video that year, but not even be listed as a potential contender for video or pop video of the year at the world\u2019s biggest music video ceremony?<\/p>\n

\n\tPerhaps aware of some of the fan<\/a> and media discourse<\/a> over best K-pop, MTV did nominate BTS in a main VMA category in 2020 when \u201cON\u201d competed in best pop \u2014 the first for the group and the first for any Asian artist in the show\u2019s history \u2014 alongside such artists as Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. BTS took home the best pop and best K-pop trophies, plus the technical award of best choreography and the fan-voted best group. The specialized category had to arrive first before the general one opened.<\/p>\n

\n\tTo BTS\u2019 many fans, it sometimes seems like the Western industry has a habit of building an annex when confronted with music it cannot ignore and has not made room for, rather than widening the room itself.<\/p>\n

\n\tOther award shows made their own version of that same call. Since 2020, similar fan-focused award shows including the American Music Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards and iHeartRadio Music Awards have added K-pop-specific categories, as have the data-driven Billboard Music Awards. In many cases, songs recorded entirely in English \u2014 or by acts that are not even Korean \u2014 are still recognized only in the K-pop bracket. The most recent best K-pop VMA went to \u201cBorn Again\u201d by Thailand-born LISA of BLACKPINK with Doja Cat and RAYE, an all-English single that was LISA\u2019s lone nomination that night and one plainly worthy of consideration in best pop or best collaboration. In every case, the intention was almost certainly to be generous and to respond to the growing impact of the Korean music industry. Still, many wondered whether the ultimate effect would silo these artists from the larger pop music conversation.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor their part, BTS did not opt out of this system but publicly committed to it for years. Between 2021 and 2023, the septet collected five Grammy nominations: three straight in best pop duo\/group performance for \u201cDynamite,\u201d \u201cButter\u201d and \u201cMy Universe,\u201d the latter a collab with longtime Grammy favorites Coldplay, plus best music video for \u201cYet to Come\u201d and an album of the year credit as featured artists on Coldplay\u2019s Music of the Spheres. They presented awards, performed on the telecast three years running (once in tandem with other acts), and were invited to serve as voting members of the Recording Academy in 2019. They called the Grammy their \u201clast summit<\/a>\u201c<\/a> left to climb. They also lost, gracefully, five times.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis past February, K-pop had its biggest night ever at the Grammys. Billboard Hot 100<\/a> No. 1 hit \u201cGolden\u201d from KPop Demon Hunters became the first song from the K-pop scene to win a Grammy when it won best song written for visual media. BLACKPINK\u2019s ROS\u00c9 opened the show after becoming the first K-pop soloist nominated in the general field, thanks to \u201cAPT.\u201d with Bruno Mars, a record and song of the year nominee. HYBE\u2019s global<\/a> girl group KATSEYE was up for best new artist and best pop duo\/group performance. The ceremony demonstrated in real time that the existing categories were perfectly capable of holding this music scene and the different ways it was extending internationally.<\/p>\n

\n\tFour months after its 2026 telecast, the Recording Academy announced the newly added best Asian pop music performance category, which privately confused those close to these industries. Its official description says eligible recordings \u201ctypically feature melody-driven composition, mainstream pop songwriting, and commercially oriented production,\u201d often marked by \u201cgenre-blending arrangements, layered production, and dynamic structural shifts.\u201d Remove the \u201cAsian\u201d geography and that could describe nearly every record nominated in the pop performance categories.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe one criterion that actually narrows the field is language. Recordings \u201cmust feature meaningful use of one or more Asian languages,\u201d and anything performed entirely in English is explicitly ruled out \u2014 though the Academy notes those songs remain eligible elsewhere, and that musical style, not a performer\u2019s nationality, governs eligibility. While the description leaves unresolved whether the Indian subcontinent or the Middle East is included, it also specifically spotlights K-pop, J-pop and C-pop as three major East Asian industries whose pop music outputs have little in common sonically except the region they originate from.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpecifically, that language test is even trickier than it first appears. An official description stipulates<\/a> that only one version of a recording can compete in a performance category in a given year, and that a recording \u201centered in another performance category is not also eligible in best Asian pop music performance for a different version featuring an Asian language performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRun ARIRANG through those rules and the choices become mostly clearer. \u201cSWIM,\u201d the Hot 100-topping lead single performed entirely in English, is ineligible for the new category and would have gone where the past BTS smashes have: best pop duo\/group performance. (That\u2019s one of the more competitive races on the ballot, with 256 entries competing for five slots last year.) The original, all-English version of new single \u201cNORMAL\u201d could also have been entered here, as could the Diplo-assisted \u201cLike Animals.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile, the LP\u2019s opening track \u201cBody to Body,\u201d which reinterprets the Korean folk song the album is named after, should comfortably have qualified for Asian pop and would arguably have been a favorite to win it. The remaining tracks across ARIRANG bring the classic K-pop mix of English and Korean lyrics, meaning songs like \u201cHooligan,\u201d \u201cAliens,\u201d \u201cFYA,\u201d \u201c2.0,\u201d \u201cMerry Go Round,\u201d \u201cthey don\u2019t know \u2019bout us,\u201d \u201cOne More Night,\u201d \u201cPlease\u201d and \u201cInto the Sun\u201d would all likely qualify for best Asian pop performance, though the Academy would need to determine if a song had enough of an Asian language in the recording to qualify. Only \u201cNORMAL,\u201d which exists in both English and Korean versions, runs into the rule that a single recording may compete in only one performance category in a given year, meaning the group would have had to decide where to enter it if it chose to submit.<\/p>\n

\n\tNothing in the Recording Academy\u2019s new arrangements would have subtracted anything. BTS could have entered \u201cSWIM\u201d in pop duo\/group, \u201cBody to Body\u201d or the Korean version of \u201cNORMAL\u201d in Asian pop, and still submitted their choices for record and song of the year \u2014 everything available to them last year, plus a new category in which to compete. That is the Academy\u2019s argument and it is correct on paper.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut it is also reminiscent of the 2019 VMAs. While best K-pop took nothing away from BTS and they remained eligible for every major race on that year\u2019s ballot, they were nominated for none of them. Six years later, an all-English single by a Thai artist with American and British featured performers (the aforementioned \u201cBorn Again\u201d) drew exactly one nomination, in the K-pop category. The objection is not that a specialized category removes an entry. It is the concern, well-founded or not, that once the category exists, it becomes the too-obvious place to file the record and artists \u2014 and the general categories quietly stop being part of the conversation.<\/p>\n

\n\tHarvey Mason Jr. gave a response<\/a> with logic that is sound on its own terms. The Recording Academy and MusiCares CEO emphasized that a genre-specific submission does not preclude a general field submission. He wrote that the Academy\u2019s aim is \u201cnever to divide, but to expand.\u201d And all of that is true, more categories should mean more artists recognized and greater representation. But the 2019 VMAs could have used that logic as well. The problem was never that BTS was first allowed in through the side entrance, but that once it was there, it took that much longer for them \u2014 not to mention their K-pop peers or other underrepresented artists and music scenes \u2014 to break through before getting to use the main entrance like everybody else. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn the aftermath of BTS\u2019 announcement, insight from those in<\/a> and out of the commit<\/a>t<\/a>ees<\/a> that helped develop the category have come to light. Months before the 2026 ceremony, Mason told Billboard <\/a>that any consideration for a specific K-pop category would need members in the Recording Academy to sustain it: \u201cWe need to continue to reach into that community and make sure the people who are creating it and writing it and producing and singing it are members of our organization so we can get it right, get the definitions of the category right, get what goes into the category right.\u201d Last year, at least a dozen artists under the HYBE LABELS umbrella (including members of SEVENTEEN, ENHYPEN, LE SSERAFIM and KATSEYE) joined BTS as voting members, and another 20 individuals under JYP Entertainment (including the members of TWICE and Stray Kids) joined this year. Work is being done internally, but that didn\u2019t seem to be communicated as well as it could have been. More discussion or larger town halls are likely needed to decide how the category looks in future shows \u2014 if it moves forward at all. <\/p>\n

\n\tStill, BTS\u2019 experiences have not changed, nor has their argument, and the band is now standing up to make it at a pivotal moment in their career.<\/p>\n

\n\tARIRANG opened with 641,000 equivalent album units and spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200<\/a>, the first album by a Korean act ever to do so. In its mid-year report<\/a>, Luminate shared it finishing the first half of 2026 as the fourth-biggest album by equivalent-album units as well as the best-selling CD album and vinyl record outright in the U.S. This week, more than four months after release, it jumped back to No. 9 for its 13th week in the top 10, another record set for Korean acts. Lead single \u201cSWIM\u201d debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 while every other eligible track from ARIRANG has bowed on the chart.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Recording Academy has always stressed that Grammy Awards and nominations are not and should not be based on commercial success. Still, an artist posting those numbers should not be asking to be let in; they\u2019re already here and should be allowed to take up as much space as they\u2019ve earned \u2014 regardless of perceived public acknowledgment.<\/p>\n

\n\tBTS is not turning down recognition. They are turning down a version of recognition they think is smaller than the one their year has already earned, and doing so at the moment that could certainly deliver the trophy they spent so many years chasing. As noted above, \u201cSWIM\u201d would not be eligible in the Asian pop category, but such album standouts as \u201cHooligan,\u201d \u201c2.0,\u201d \u201cAliens\u201d and \u201cBody to Body\u201d \u2014 the last of which reinterprets the Korean folk song the LP is named after \u2014 are easily Grammy-worthy, and BTS\u2019 name recognition alone could have led to the Academy giving them their first trophy. Future releases and solo projects could likely produce several more. But BTS has never been one to rest on past accomplishments, and ARIRANG is a specifically globally focused record that brought in a wave of new collaborators to shake up the formula that had already earned them six No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 and six No. 1 singles on the Hot 100; with ARIRANG\u2018s release, their total on both tallies is up to seven.<\/p>\n

\n\tRM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook may not have a better shot at their first group Grammy than the one they just declined. But they seemed to have withdrawn because the alternative was more than likely to win in a way that would confirm a premise they have spent their entire careers disproving: that their music is a regional variant or an alternative to the mainstream rather than part of general pop culture itself. <\/p>\n

\n\tBTS have seen this movie before and they know how it ends, but this time they\u2019re leaving before the finale and telling everyone why on the way out.<\/p>\n
