On August 1, 1981, Music Television\u2014known as MTV\u2014launched<\/a> its first broadcast with The Buggles\u2019 \u201cVideo Killed the Radio Star,\u201d ushering in a new era of pop music.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best of TV combined with the best of radio,\u201d video jockey Mark Goodman told the audience in the wee hours of the night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It turned out to be a potent mix, with video becoming as important as the music itself. Among the first videos shown on MTV were Pat Benetar\u2019s \u201cYou Better Run<\/a>,\u201d Rod Stewart\u2019s \u201cShe Won\u2019t Dance with Me<\/a>,\u201d and The Who\u2019s \u201cYou Better You Bet<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the decades, MTV went through many different phases before ultimately fading as cable TV was replaced by the internet\u2014but not without forever leaving its mark on music.<\/p>\n
