{"id":616299,"date":"2026-08-02T07:21:22","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T07:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/616299\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T07:21:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T07:21:22","slug":"spains-north-africa-enclave-returns-to-normal-as-most-of-the-migrants-who-had-entered-depart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/616299\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain&#8217;s North Africa enclave returns to normal as most of the migrants who had entered depart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article-updated-redesign article-updated-redesign-\" title=\"Saturday 1 Aug 2026, 4:34 PM\">\n<p>                            LAST UPDATE<br \/>\n                            |<br \/>\n                            15 hrs ago\n                        <\/p>\n<p>ALMOST ALL OF the tens of thousands of migrants who entered Spain\u2019s enclave of Ceuta in North Africa had left by Saturday, officials said, as some EU countries bolstered their border controls over the sudden influx.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 60,000 migrants entered Ceuta over just a few days from neighbouring Morocco, the enclave\u2019s regional president Juan Jesus Vivas told reporters, but by today, Spain\u2019s interior minister said almost all had left.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation has been almost entirely reversed,\u201d Fernando Grande-Marlaska told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland, as part of its EU Presidency, will host a meeting to discuss the situation on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on X Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin said that the meeting will be led by Justice Minister Jim O\u2019Callaghan.<\/p>\n<p>Under the watch of Spanish soldiers and police on Saturday morning, the remaining young migrants continued crossing back over the border to Morocco, AFP journalists saw.<\/p>\n<p>Any who lingered too long on the coastal path were immediately ushered back out by the soldiers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1785655282_397_.jpeg\"  alt=\"spanish-army-soldiers-stand-next-to-migrants-who-swam-from-morocco-to-the-spanish-enclave-of-ceuta-saturday-aug-1-2026-ap-photoantonio-sempere\" class=\"alignnone inline-image\" \/><br \/>\n            Spanish army soldiers stand next to migrants who swam from Morocco to Spanish enclave of Ceuta                    Alamy Stock Photo<\/p>\n<p>    Alamy Stock Photo\n<\/p>\n<p>To cross into Ceuta, many swam around a small border barrier that juts out into the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>At least 67 people died in the attempt, said Grande-Marlaska, providing updated figures today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to go to Europe to work and earn a living. That\u2019s it,\u201d Souleye Bodian (19), a Senegalese migrant told AFP outside a migrant centre in Ceuta where dozens of other sub-Saharan African migrants waited for officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know that in Africa there isn\u2019t much opportunity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The sudden influx of migrants had sparked political panic in Europe.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Adios\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two EU countries issued a joint open letter today calling for a video meeting of the bloc\u2019s interior ministers \u201cas a matter of urgency\u201d to agree a speedy coordinated response, and to \u201cprevent further uncontrolled crossings\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni then wrote on X: \u201cDefending the external borders of the Union is not the interest of a single Nation. He backed a video meeting of interior ministers.<\/p>\n<p>EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said on X that the bloc needed \u201ca lessons learned process to improve our European resilience,\u201d while pointing out that \u201cnot a single person reached mainland Spain or the rest of the EU\u201d during the influx.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">I held a conference call with Commissioners <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/magnusbrunner?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">@magnusbrunner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dubravkasuica?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">@dubravkasuica<\/a> for an update on the situation in Ceuta.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that the vast majority of those who arrived illegally have returned to Morocco, due to the effective work of Spanish and Moroccan law\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vonderleyen\/status\/2083508987320803444?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">August 1, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Madrid had rushed security personnel and equipment to the North African outpost that it has run for centuries.<\/p>\n<p>After a night of wandering the beaches and streets of Ceuta or sleeping on the sand, AFP journalists observed Saturday, some young people turned back to say \u201cadios\u201d or \u201cgoodbye\u201d to officers before crossing back to Morocco.<\/p>\n<p>More soldiers stood guard on the small beach next to the border fence, positioned under parasols in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Buoys and flippers still littered the ground along the fence, while others floated in the water.<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s interior ministry said a new pneumatic barrier 500 metres in length was installed near the border post to reinforce security.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A better future\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In Morocco, Soufian (42) told AFP that he had been planning to make a swim from his coastal town of Martil, located less than 40 kilometres from Ceuta, when a friend told him that the border was open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t take long \u2013 just five minutes or less, maybe three \u2013 since it was right at the border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained he was motivated by the potential to visit his mother, who is ill and lives in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though there\u2019s no food, nothing at all, I\u2019ll endure anything to see my mother,\u201d Soufian said, adding he makes just \u20ac10 a day working 12-hour shifts as a security guard.<\/p>\n<p>As for the others who crossed, he said, \u201ceveryone wants to move up, wants a good future \u2013 something that doesn\u2019t exist in Morocco\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What sparked the sudden massive flow of migrants remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Morocco\u2019s authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the development.<\/p>\n<p>A Moroccan source close to the border operations told AFP on condition of anonymity Saturday that those being returned by Spain were being transported home directly by bus or via the railway station in Tangier, 70 kilometres away.<\/p>\n<p>The Fnideq border crossing is now \u201ccompletely secure\u201d, the source added, as are the hills overlooking it, from which hundreds of people, mostly young men, had thrown stones at security forces on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Ceuta, a territory of 18.5 square kilometres, and the nearby enclave of Melilla are Europe\u2019s only two land borders with Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Previous migrant surges have occurred during tensions between Spain and Morocco, including in 2021 which led more than 10,000 migrants to enter Ceuta in just two days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;
