A MAN HAS died after he got into difficulty in the water at the pier in Castletownbere, Co Cork.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The incident occurred at about 4.30pm on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The emergency services were contacted. The National Ambulance Service issued an alert to Valentia Coastguard.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Castletownbere Coastguard, the local RNLI lifeboat attended at the scene. The man was taken from the water and was pronounced dead at the scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The body of the man has been taken to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital. The Coroner has been contacted.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A post-mortem examination will be carried out and an inquest will be held at a later date.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It is understood that the deceased worked as a crew member on a tug boat.<\/p>\n
Castletownbere is currently hosting its popular nine-day Festival of the Seas, which attracts crowds to the area\u00a0<\/p>\n
Deputy Mayor of the County, councillor Finbarr Harrington, said that his thoughts and prayers were with the families of the deceased man.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just opened the festival last night. It is a great family festival so for something like this to happen is very sad.<\/p>\n
