{"id":617984,"date":"2026-08-03T10:49:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T10:49:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/617984\/"},"modified":"2026-08-03T10:49:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T10:49:17","slug":"spain-and-morocco-give-conflicting-accounts-of-number-of-deaths-in-ceuta-rush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/617984\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain and Morocco give conflicting accounts of number of deaths in Ceuta rush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SPAIN AND MOROCCO have given conflicting figures for the number of people who died in the recent wave of migration into\u00a0Spain\u2019s Ceuta exclave from Morocco.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish officials have said at least 72 people died during the rush, but Moroccan officials later presented a much lower estimate of only 11.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the estimated 60,000 people who rushed into Spain\u2019s north African territory \u2014 most by swimming \u2014 have returned to Morocco since the territory\u2019s largest mass migrant crossing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latest figure that we have is 72,\u201d the Spanish government\u2019s delegate to Ceuta, Miguel Angel Perez Triano, told reporters, when asked about the number of fatalities. Spain\u2019s previous toll was 67 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Morocco\u2019s interior ministry issued its own toll, saying 11 people had died trying to reach Ceuta.
