Recently, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) conducted a survey to determine what\u2019s driving Americans\u2019 poor sleep hygiene and found six common factors\u2014many of which are related to stress.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">For the survey, the AASM <a href=\"https:\/\/aasm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/sleep-prioritization-survey-2025-factors-impacting-sleep.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/aasm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/sleep-prioritization-survey-2025-factors-impacting-sleep.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"polled\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">polled<\/a> more than 2,000 adults about their sleep habits, along with what prevents them from getting sufficient shut-eye. Nearly half (45%) said that family responsibilities have a major or moderate impact on their ability to sleep well on a regular basis. Participants also said stress about work (39%), housing costs (36%), and work schedules (35%) had an impact.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Health challenges also appear to be preventing some people from getting a good night\u2019s sleep. Christopher Winter, M.D.<\/a>, board-certified sleep medicine researcher and author of The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">It\u2019s normal to have sleep disruptions here and there, Dr. Kuhlmann says. \u201cBut regularly interrupted sleep can prevent your body and brain from getting the restorative rest they need,\u201d he says. \u201cEven if you spend enough total time in bed, fragmented sleep reduces sleep quality and can leave you feeling tired, less alert and less able to concentrate the next day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Interrupted sleep not only cuts into sleep time, but it affects sleep quality, Dr. Malow says. \u201cThink of it as being woken from a deep sleep\u2014even if you return to sleep fairly quickly, you will still need to go through the stages to get back into deep sleep,\u201d she says. \u201cThat affects sleep quality with more light than deep sleep. We need deep sleep to feel fully restored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"20.0\">How much sleep do you need?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Your sleep needs change as you age, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sleep\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sleep\/about\/index.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"CDC\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CDC<\/a> recommends that most adults aim for at least seven hours of sleep a night.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"22.0\">What can you do if stress is messing with your sleep?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Stress can be tricky to manage, especially if you\u2019re so stressed that it\u2019s messing with your sleep. Still, AASM outlines specific advice on how to navigate this:<\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"24.0\"><strong data-node-id=\"24.0.0\">Delegate when you can.<\/strong> If you\u2019re caregiving or have family responsibilities that mess with your sleep, look for chances to ask for support and delegate when you\u2019re able.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"24.1\"><strong data-node-id=\"24.1.0\">Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule.<\/strong> Go to bed when you feel sleepy and try to wake up at the same time each day, including weekends. This helps to keep your body\u2019s internal clock on track.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"24.2\"><strong data-node-id=\"24.2.0\">Decompress before bed.<\/strong> To help shift your brain into rest mode, set aside 30 to 60 minutes before bed to mentally unwind. That means doing your best to avoid screens, work emails, and potentially stressful conversations.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"24.3\"><strong data-node-id=\"24.3.0\">Stay active.<\/strong> Regular physical activity can boost sleep quality and ease stress. Just try to avoid any vigorous exercise right before bed.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:disc;\" data-node-id=\"24.4\"><strong data-node-id=\"24.4.0\">Eat a balanced diet.<\/strong> Try to have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, along with whole grains and protein to support consistent energy levels. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cIf stress or anxiety is playing a role, addressing those underlying issues can help improve sleep,\u201d Dr. Kuhlmann says. \u201cTalk therapy can be effective in managing stress, anxiety or depression.\u201d There\u2019s also a treatment known as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which is designed to help people change their thoughts and behaviors that interfere with sleep, he notes.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cFor the medical causes, make sure to see a healthcare provider to address whether anything medical-related might be affecting sleep,\u201d Dr. Malow says. But Dr. Winter acknowledges that sometimes lack of sleep can feel like it\u2019s part of an impossible scenario of long work schedules and family demands. \u201cThe people in these situations are feeling stress for a reason,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"27.0\">Other ways to support good sleep<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Good sleep hygiene can help you set yourself up for a good night\u2019s sleep, Dr. Kuhlmann says.
