their shells and devour their flesh, causing problems for both the environment and commercial fishers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hobart has a native species of orange break-words\">With no natural predators in Australia, the invasive seastar quickly takes over marine ecosystems, and so intervention is required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The clean-up was organised in an estuary off the River Derwent <a data-ylk=\"slk:by local diver Keith Thomas-Wurth through his Invasive Seastar Clean Up md:leading-8 break-words\">Pictures taken on Sunday show a massive pile of seastars collected on the back of a ute for disposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although the average weight of a seastar is just 100 grams, the largest they recovered was 145 grams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The species is thought to have hitched a ride to Australia as larvae in the ballast water of ships visiting from Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They were first detected in Tasmania in 1986 and had spread across Bass
