Enter Dubai’s flamboyant producer Rajan, drama-saver. \u201cHe was uncomfortable, he was crying,\u201d Lall remembers. \u201cSanjeev Kumar had come home and Jagjit Singh and I were discussing it till late in the morning. Money was not an issue. But Mahesh narrated the story to Sanjeev and he decided to do the film next day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rajan wasn\u2019t having it. \u201cI called Mahesh down,\u201d he says. \u201cI said, Mahesh, you better come. Rajan, but you know, you committed to Haribhai, and he\u2019s a star. Eventually we all prevailed upon him, in spite of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kher now laughs at his meltdown. \u201cMy grandfather used to say, if you want to be equal with anybody in the world, just don\u2019t expect anything from the person. Now I can say anything to him, so I cursed him!\u201d He shrugs. \u201cTruth is sometimes very empowering. I still speak my mind out whether it\u2019s popular or not. I need to be popular with myself, then with the rest of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mahesh blinked first. Ten days before shooting, the part was Kher\u2019s again. Saaransh dropped in 1984 and\u2014boom\u2014Anupam Kher was everywhere. Sanjeev Kumar even watched the film alone and later admitted, \u201cI couldn\u2019t have done this role.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rajan\u2019s pad was the original Bollywood after-hours lounge. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey used to stay till four in the morning. I don\u2019t drink\u2014I\u2019m a teetotaler,\u201d he laughs.
\u201cTeetotaler among raging, high-functioning alcoholics!\u201d Kher shoots back.<\/p>\n

Kher still lives by the lesson of Saaransh. \u201cI was 28, playing a 65-year-old man,\u201d he says. \u201cFive minutes before the shoot I asked Mahesh, what is that one quality this character has? He said compassion. That compassion has stayed with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fast forward 41 years and the circle is deliciously complete. Anupam Kher is in Dubai to promote his new film Tanvi The Great<\/strong>, and guess who\u2019s hosting the splashy screening? None other than Rajan Lall.<\/p>\n

And because these two can\u2019t resist a style moment, Rajan rolls in wearing a flamboyant pink-striped suit with glossy leather shoes, while Kher promptly steals his sharp jacket for photos. Fashion policing? Forget it\u2014this is friendship couture.<\/p>\n

Rajan plays it modest: \u201cI was only a catalyst,\u201d he insists. But let\u2019s be real\u2014without that late-night lobby ambush in a Mumbai apartment block, the world might never have witnessed Kher\u2019s powerhouse debut.<\/p>\n

Friendship. Compassion. Conviction. Saaransh delivered all three. <\/p>\n

And as Dubai applauds Tanvi The Great <\/strong>these two prove that some friendships don\u2019t fade\u2014they just wait for the next fabulous sequel.<\/p>\n
