The fall film<\/a> festival calendar just added a major dose of kaiju cinema. The New York Film Festival has announced that Takashi Yamazaki\u2019s \u201cGodzilla Minus Zero\u201d will be making its world premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection for the festival\u2019s 64th edition. <\/p>\n

\u201cGodzilla Minus Zero\u201d serves as a direct sequel to 2023\u2019s \u201cGodzilla Minus One<\/a>,\u201d which grossed more than $100 million worldwide, roughly ten times its budget. It rode strong critical reviews<\/a> and Oscar buzz to become a cultural phenomenon, bolstering its success with a black-and-white re-release titled \u201cGodzilla Minus One\/Minus Color.\u201d <\/p>\n

The new film is a continuation of original Japanese studio Toho\u2019s critically lauded Godzilla series, which exists separately from the American iteration seen in Legendary\u2019s Monsterverse (next up on that front: 2027\u2019s \u201cGodzilla x Kong: Supernova). \u201cMinus Zero\u201d will take the action to New York City, as featured in a CinemaCon tease<\/a> that showed the iconic monster marching alongside the statue of liberty. <\/p>\n

\u201cGodzilla Minus Zero\u201d features returning stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, and Sakura Ando alongside franchise newcomer Min Tanaka. Yamazaki, who won an Oscar for the first film\u2019s visual effects<\/a>, returns to write and direct. Notably, the sequel will also be the first Japanese movie to be shot for IMAX. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt is truly an honor to introduce our film to a global audience for the first time in a place of such history and prestige,\u201d Yamazaki said in a statement. \u201cI am filled with both awe and excitement to see how far the power of Japan\u2019s Godzilla can terrify audiences around the world, and whether they will resonate with what lies beyond that fear.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cMore than 70 years after the first Godzilla movie, Takashi Yamazaki continues to prove that there\u2019s life in the old franchise yet, returning to its postwar roots to locate a haunting, primal terror,\u201d NYFF<\/a> Artistic Director Dennis Lim added. \u201cLike its predecessor, \u2018Godzilla Minus Zero\u2019 is a throwback blockbuster, a showcase for human drama and innovative craft, and we are excited to have its world premiere as this year\u2019s NYFF Spotlight Gala.\u201d<\/p>\n

GKIDS will release \u201cGodzilla Minus Zero\u201d in theaters on Friday, November 6. NYFF64 takes place from September 25 \u2013 October 12.
