{"id":620600,"date":"2026-08-04T21:19:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T21:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/620600\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T21:19:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T21:19:18","slug":"football-club-treasurer-convicted-of-dangerous-driving-after-speeding-at-match-referee-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/620600\/","title":{"rendered":"Football club treasurer convicted of dangerous driving after speeding at match referee \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The treasurer of a Northern Irish football club has been convicted of dangerous driving after deliberately driving at the match referee. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Michael Godfrey claimed he was speeding out of the Ballymena Showgrounds to get to the toilet, but Judge Nigel Broderick told Ballymena Magistrates Court he was satisfied the 53-year-old had deliberately driven at the official. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The judge said it was clear from CCTV footage of the incident that Godfrey\u2019s car was stationary while he was talking to a colleague and that there was \u201ca slight right turn\u201d of the wheels towards the referee as he sped off. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The judge said he was satisfied that Godfrey, of Springfield, Kells, Co Antrim, was guilty of dangerous driving on October 18th last. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The incident occurred after a match between North Ballymena Rangers and Ravel Rovers. The referee gave evidence that the Rangers\u2019 goalkeeper was given a red card for subjecting him to \u201cfoul and abusive language\u201d after the final whistle. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAt that point, it was a matter for me as normal to shake hands with the players and officials of both teams and gather flags and head back to the changing room,\u201d he told the court. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He told the prosecuting lawyer that as he did so he heard \u201ca car coming at speed\u201d from behind. He said he had to jump out of the way \u201cto avoid contact\u201d and that he used his match notebook to write down the registration plate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under cross-examination, the referee agreed that he did not know Godfrey and said the defendant had not directed any abuse at him. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Godfrey\u2019s barrister said his client \u201caccepts that he drove at speed\u201d, but denied that he drove at the referee. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The referee cited the CCTV footage, which he said \u201cshows that he stops and waits for me to walk into his path\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In his evidence, Godfrey said he has a medical condition and was driving at speed to get to his then partner\u2019s home, which was nearby, to use the toilet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said he was diagnosed with diverticulitis in 2024 and was suffering severe stomach cramps as the game ended.
