However, the rover kept going and is still exploring the Martian surface over a decade later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NASA and Jet Population Laboratory (JPL) engineers have continued to check in on the wheels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In 2024, NASA released images of one of the rover&#8217;s damaged wheels following one such check-in. (Image credit: NASA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;They&#8217;re narrower, with a bigger diameter and thicker aluminum,&#8221; NASA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Described by NASA as &#8220;the most advanced robotic explorer ever sent to the Red Planet,&#8221; Perseverance has already collected over two dozen diverse rock samples, among other discoveries, to lay the groundwork for future human exploration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Curiosity&#8217;s mission to uncover Mars&#8217; past<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Curiosity landed inside Mars&#8217; Gale Crater on Aug. 5, 2012, to explore if the planet ever had the right conditions to support small life forms known as microbes, according to <a data-ylk=\"slk:NASA;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/msl-curiosity\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>. It collected 42 powderized rock samples using the drill located on its arm, and it continues to examine the rock record from a period when Mars may have been home to microbial life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Curiosity&#8217;s recent discovery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On June 19 and 20 of this year, Curiosity discovered a field of surface features called polygons with honeycomb textures.
