Pricewatch readers wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/your-money\/2024\/04\/22\/deposit-return-scheme-i-spent-90-minutes-trying-to-return-bottles-this-scheme-is-vile\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/your-money\/2024\/04\/22\/deposit-return-scheme-i-spent-90-minutes-trying-to-return-bottles-this-scheme-is-vile\/\">to express frustrations<\/a> with the scheme, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2024\/08\/01\/six-months-into-the-re-turn-scheme-how-is-it-working-out-now\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2024\/08\/01\/six-months-into-the-re-turn-scheme-how-is-it-working-out-now\/\">Liveline listeners took to the phones<\/a> about costs and the hassle. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">There have been concerns raised around littering, with Dublin City Council suggesting limiting access to the scheme to individuals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/2026\/06\/17\/limit-return-scheme-to-those-with-registered-waste-collection-to-reduce-bin-scavenging-dcc-says\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/2026\/06\/17\/limit-return-scheme-to-those-with-registered-waste-collection-to-reduce-bin-scavenging-dcc-says\/\">with registered domestic waste collection contracts<\/a> in a bid to reduce \u201copportunistic\u201d bin scavenging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">However, the numbers using the scheme have increased year-on-year. Advocates point to a significant increase in recycling as a result of the scheme\u2019s introduction. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/08\/05\/re-turn-chief-executive-and-board-share-six-figure-pay-rise\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/08\/05\/re-turn-chief-executive-and-board-share-six-figure-pay-rise\/\">1.4 billion cans and bottles were returned last year<\/a>, up from 877 million in 2024.
