The New York Film<\/a> Festival (September 25-October 12), as usual, will bring a thoughtfully curated collection of world premieres and 2026 festival favorites to all five boroughs this fall. If you missed out on the Berlin, Cannes, or Toronto film festivals<\/a> \u2014 or didn\u2019t get a chance to see everything that\u2019s on your watch list \u2014 the NYFF<\/a> is a great chance to catch up. Or discover many films for the first time.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the festival team announced the grand total of 32 films featured as part of its annual Main Slate, with Opening Night (\u201cJames Gray\u2019s \u201cPaper Tiger<\/a>\u201c), Centerpiece (Tony Gilroy\u2019s \u201cBehemoth!<\/a>\u201c), and Closing Night (Ava DuVernay\u2019s \u201c14th<\/a>\u201c) previously unveiled. (Additionally, NYFF named \u201cGodzilla Minus Zero\u201d<\/a> as the Spotlight Gala on Tuesday.)<\/p>\n

Overall, the Main Slate selection hails from 31 countries \u2014 with three world, seven North American, and 13 U.S. premieres. Along with \u201cBehemoth!\u201d and \u201c14th,\u201d NYFF will world-premiere Iranian filmmaker Mani Haghighi\u2019s (\u201cSubtraction,\u201d \u201cA Dragon Arrives!\u201d) \u201cI Deserve a Lover Whose Every Rise Sets Fiery Dooms Raging Across the Skies\u201d \u2014 a documentary about Iranian artist\/curator Nasser Bakhshi. His sprawling collection of found art objects has helped preserve Iran\u2019s pre-Islamic Republic memory.<\/p>\n

Out of the Cannes Film Festival: Ry\u00fbsuke Hamaguchi\u2019s Best Actress-winning emotional epic \u201cAll of a Sudden,\u201d Marine Atlan\u2019s Critics\u2019 Week winner \u201cLa Gradiva,\u201d NYFF perennial Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s \u201cBitter Christmas,\u201d Arie and Chuko Esiri\u2019s Nigerian-set Virginia Woolf reimagining \u201cClarissa,\u201d Valeska Grisebach\u2019s Jury Prize-winning \u201cThe Dreamed Adventure,\u201d Emmanuel Marre\u2019s screenplay winner \u201cA Man of His Time,\u201d Sandra Wollner\u2019s Un Certain Regard prizee \u201cEverytime,\u201d Pawe\u0142 Pawlikowski\u2019s Best Director winner \u201cFatherland,\u201d Ira Sachs\u2019 Rami Malek-starring \u201cThe Man I Love,\u201d Andrey Zvyagintsev\u2019s Grand Jury Prize winner \u201cMinotaur,\u201d Arthur Harari\u2019s L\u00e9a Seydoux-starrer \u201cThe Unknown,\u201d<\/a> and more.<\/p>\n

William Greaves and David Greaves\u2019 recent Albie Award-winning documentary \u201cOnce Upon a Time in Harlem<\/a>,\u201d which recaptures a reunion of Harlem Renaissance luminaries and was a major hit out of Sundance, also makes a stop at NYFF.<\/p>\n

Hailing from all the way back to the Berlin Film Festival: Alain Gomis\u2019 epically scaled story of African immigrants in France, \u201cDAO\u201d; Hong Sangsoo\u2019s latest character study \u201cThe Day She Returns\u201d; Angela Schanelec\u2019s relationship puzzle \u201cMy Wife Cries\u201d; and Markus Schleinzer\u2019s devastating historical drama \u201cRose,\u201d<\/a> which won Sandra H\u00fcller the Silver Bear for Best Actress.<\/p>\n

Not seen elsewhere quite yet: Andrew Haigh\u2019s queer Colm To\u00edb\u00edn adaptation \u201cA Long Winter,\u201d Chris Rock\u2019s industry drama \u201cMisty Green,\u201d Mike Leigh\u2019s probably final film \u201cTender Loving Care,\u201d the next installment of \u201cMy Undesirable Friends\u201d from Julia Loktev, and \u201cPossible Love\u201d \u2014 Lee Chang-dong\u2019s first feature film since 2018\u2019s \u201cBurning.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Lincoln Center in Manhattan, venues include BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) (Brooklyn), Museum of the Moving Image (Queens), Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (Staten Island), and AMC Bay Plaza Cinema (Bronx).<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to recall a prior Main Slate program in which the state of the world has been as urgently reflected in so many creative ways,\u201d said Dennis Lim, NYFF artistic director. \u201cYou could take any cross-section of this lineup and come away with a vivid picture of what our present looks, sounds, and feels like. I\u2019m deeply encouraged to be able to introduce New York audiences to works by so many fearless, imaginative directors whose artistry has been inspired by the shared realities of our world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not pictured (yet anyway): Cristian Mungiu\u2019s Palme d\u2019Or-winning \u201cFjord\u201d (October 9) and Los Javis\u2019 \u201cLa Bola Negra<\/a>\u201d (October 16) \u2014 but they\u2019re both opening in close proximity to NYFF anyway, so you won\u2019t be waiting long.<\/p>\n
