Smith\u2019s fifth studio album arrives on Aug. 21<\/p>\n
\n\tSam Smith<\/a> has released \u201cWhen He\u2019s Gone,\u201d the third single from their upcoming fifth album, Hazel Eyes. Listen to the bluesy lament below.<\/p>\n \n\tThe track opens with finger-picked guitar as Smith croons over a long-lost lover. As the song progresses, the guitar swells and invites the rest of a band to join in, including booming drums and a chorus of voices to bolster Smith\u2019s signature tenor. \u201cWhen he\u2019s walking out on me, he takes everything I need,\u201d the artist sings. \u201cMy whole world\u2019s broken when he\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThis album explores every shade of a relationship and\u00a0\u2018When He\u2019s Gone\u2019\u00a0is more of a melancholy shade,\u201d\u00a0Smith said in a statement. \u201cWe captured it live without a click track, and built everything around that original recording to preserve the feeling of a storm rumbling in the distance.\u201d<\/p>\n \t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cWhen He\u2019s Gone\u201d follows previous singles \u201cMy Guy\u201d and \u201cOh Mother,\u201d the latter of which featured the TwoCity Chorus. The three songs will appear on Hazel Eyes, which arrives on Aug. 21. Their last record, Gloria<\/a>, was released in 2023 and included the Grammy Award-winning \u201cUnholy,\u201d<\/a> which marked the first time an openly trans artist (the song\u2019s featured artist, Kim Petras) won a Grammy. In 2024, Smith celebrated the 10th anniversary of their debut album, In the Lonely Hour<\/a>, with a special reissue, and contributed covers of Sylvester and Beverly Glenn-Copeland songs to Red Hot Organization\u2019s compilation TRA\u200b\u0418\u200b\u01a7\u200bA<\/a>.<\/p>\n \n\tHazel Eyes was co-produced with\u00a0David Odlum and\u00a0Simon Aldred. It features collaborations with Feist, Shahzad Ismaily, and Rob Moose. Smith will play a series of mini residencies across Mexico and the United Kingdom through August and September.
