We knew that we were about to see something far older than ourselves. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Then the birds stopped singing. The temperature dropped. The light turned strangely metallic. And through a break in the cloud, the sun simply disappeared. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For billions of years, somewhere on Earth, the moon has cast its shadow across our planet. Long before humans were here to witness it, and long before anyone understood why it happened, eclipses came and went. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Every eclipse we see today is part of that same celestial rhythm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Wednesday, August 12th, that same celestial rhythm will play out again. This time, the path of totality crosses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iceland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iceland\/\">Iceland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greenland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greenland\/\">Greenland<\/a> and northern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\">Spain<\/a>. Ireland won\u2019t experience minutes of total darkness, but we will see one of the deepest partial eclipses anywhere in Europe, with the moon covering almost 98 per cent of the sun in the southwest. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Unlike chasing eclipses abroad, this one asks little of us; a gap in the cloud, a clear line to the western horizon. That\u2019s all it takes to reveal itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At a media briefing on the upcoming event, I asked the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-space-agency\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-space-agency\/\">European Space Agency<\/a>\u2019s (ESA) director of science Prof Carole Mundell and solar physicist  Miho Janvier how they viewed the eclipse. They framed it less as spectacle than a short window in which  the sun shows us what it normally keeps hidden. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It seems improbable that something as small as the moon can hide something as enormous as the sun. But the sun is about 400 times wider than the moon, and also 400 times farther away, so the two appear almost exactly the same size in our sky. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A solar eclipse is simply the moon passing directly between us and the sun, briefly hiding its surface from view. \u201cIt\u2019s a happy scientific coincidence,\u201d Mundell said, \u201cone that lets scientists study parts of the sun normally lost in its glare.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/science\/space\/2026\/07\/17\/its-beautiful-astronomers-find-atmosphere-on-a-nearby-earth-like-planet\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018It\u2019s beautiful\u2019: Astronomers find atmosphere on a nearby Earth-like planetOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Europe, Mundell said, is in the middle of \u201ca lucky trio\u201d of eclipses over the next three years: this one; a total eclipse in August 2027 crossing northern Africa and southern Europe; and another in January 2028. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When the moon blocks the sun\u2019s brilliant surface, astronomers can briefly see what\u2019s normally invisible above it: the chromosphere, which is the middle layer of the sun\u2019s atmosphere, and the sun\u2019s ghostly outer atmosphere, the corona. Sunlight leaking through valleys on the moon\u2019s edge produces a beaded string of light called Baily\u2019s beads. \u201cA very human moment,\u201d Mundell called it, as much as a scientific one. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">We won\u2019t see those phenomena here, but what we will see is remarkable in its own right. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For Ireland, the partial eclipse begins around 6.12pm, reaches its maximum near 7.10pm and ends by around  8.05pm. Coverage runs from roughly 93 per cent in the north to almost 98 per cent in Kerry and Cork, with Dublin seeing about 94 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Those percentages sound impressive but are misleading. Even at 98 per cent, the sliver of sun left uncovered is still dazzlingly bright. There\u2019ll be no sudden darkness or stars overhead. Instead, daylight turns subtly unfamiliar, colours lose some warmth, shadows sharpen and the air may feel noticeably cooler. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One final variable: Irish cloud may not co-operate. If so, the ESA will broadcast live from Spain, with Mundell joined by science educator and BBC\u2019s The Sky at Night presenter, Maggie Aderin-Pocock. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"A view of the partial solar eclipse from the Bull Wall in Clontarf, Dublin, in August 2017. Photograph:  Yannis Behrakis\/Reuters <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The last comparable eclipse here was 1999, when Dublin had 92-93 per cent coverage of the sun. The next total eclipse won\u2019t reach Ireland until 2090, so treat this as a once-in-a-generation event. The sun sits low in the west-south-west throughout, so all you need is a clear view of the horizon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cloud or not, some sliver of the sun will always be exposed, so it is never safe to look at it unaided. It is bright enough to permanently damage your retina, even though you won\u2019t feel it happening. Certified glasses marked ISO 12312-2 are the simplest way to view the sun. Sunglasses, however dark, are not safe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Eclipses are shared experiences;  for a couple of hours, people across the country will find themselves looking in exactly the same direction. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ESA Education office here in Ireland, known as ESERO Ireland, is distributing limited free glasses and providing practical guidance on <a href=\"https:\/\/esero.ie\/eclipse26\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/esero.ie\/eclipse26\">safe viewing of the eclipse<\/a>. Without glasses, a pinhole in a card, a cereal-box projector, or a kitchen colander will each cast their own tiny crescent suns on the ground. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Observatories, science centres and community groups nationwide are opening their doors, and I\u2019ll be among them, hosting a small gathering for families in Dundalk. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dunsink.dias.ie\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dunsink.dias.ie\/\">Dunsink Observatory<\/a> in Dublin, which is not normally open to the public, is welcoming 120\u2013130 ticket holders to view through its historic Grubb telescope. \u201cWe\u2019re not just looking at the sun now,\u201d says public engagement officer Sadhbh Leahy, \u201cwe\u2019re looking at the sun always.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At <a href=\"https:\/\/birrcastle.com\/event\/eclipse26-at-birr-castle-demesne\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/birrcastle.com\/event\/eclipse26-at-birr-castle-demesne\/\">Birr Castle<\/a>, up to 100 visitors will view the Leviathan telescope and solar instruments with physicist Jeremy Rigney. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Cork, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bco.ie\/solar-eclipse\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bco.ie\/solar-eclipse\/\">Blackrock Castle Observatory<\/a> is keeping it simple. \u201cWe\u2019re just encouraging everybody to be out and look,\u201d says Niall Smith, head of research at Munster Technological University. Visitors can collect free glasses and join the observatory\u2019s \u2018Inspired by the Eclipse\u2019 activity and evening of music. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/armagh.space\/whats-on\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/armagh.space\/whats-on\">Armagh Observatory and Planetarium<\/a> is running a family festival with dome shows and tours, with many events already down to their last few tickets. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And Mayo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayodarkskypark.ie\/events\/solar-eclipse-viewing-and-live-stream-with-special-guest-ronan-newman\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mayodarkskypark.ie\/events\/solar-eclipse-viewing-and-live-stream-with-special-guest-ronan-newman\/\">Wild Nephin Dark Sky Park<\/a> joins the national \u2018Under One Sky\u2019 programme, with astronomer Ronan Newman leading public viewing and a livestream. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For a full list of events, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/eclipse26.ie\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/eclipse26.ie\/\">eclipse26.ie<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/esero.ie\/events\/eclipse-26\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/esero.ie\/events\/eclipse-26\/\">ESERO Ireland<\/a> website. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/science\/2026\/07\/13\/armagh-research-could-unlock-the-story-of-how-life-began\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Armagh space research could unlock the story of how life beganOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For solar physicists, eclipses are more than spectacle and many spend their careers building artificial ones. Astronomers recreate eclipses using coronagraphs, instruments that block the sun\u2019s glare so they can study its faint corona without waiting for the moon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Solar Orbiter, the ESA\u2019s sun-observing satellite, carries a coronagraph, flying closer to the sun than any previous European mission. Proba-3 takes the idea further: two spacecraft flying in precise formation, one casting a shadow on to the other to create an artificial eclipse hundreds of metres long in space. Together with the long-running SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) mission, they\u2019re helping improve the space-weather forecasts that protect satellites, communications and power grids on Earth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland has its own part in scientifically observing the sun on the day. Dunsink\u2019s director, Peter Gallagher, will watch the eclipse from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/air-corps\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/air-corps\/\">Irish Air Corps<\/a> aircraft, using a telescope built from spare parts of the Solar Orbiter and Proba-3 coronagraphs \u2013 a direct link between an Irish research flight and the hardware studying the sun from space. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Annie Maunder from Tyrone travelled the world with her husband, British astronomer Walter Maunder, photographing eclipses\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4XKRPCDBKQT3EQFKPPOKAJQU5Q.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"449\"\/>Annie Maunder from Tyrone travelled the world with her husband, British astronomer Walter Maunder, photographing eclipses <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Long before spacecraft and coronagraphs, one Irishwoman spent much of her life chasing eclipses around the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/science\/astronomer-annie-maunder-and-old-battles-against-he-and-him-1.4558491\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/science\/astronomer-annie-maunder-and-old-battles-against-he-and-him-1.4558491\">Annie Maunder<\/a>, born in Strabane, Co Tyrone in 1868, worked at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmg.co.uk\/royal-observatory\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.rmg.co.uk\/royal-observatory\">Royal Observatory Greenwich<\/a> in the 1890s. She travelled the world with her husband, British astronomer Walter Maunder, photographing eclipses. Their sunspot records produced the famous \u2018butterfly diagram\u2019 \u2013 the first evidence that sunspots migrate from the sun\u2019s poles towards its equator during the sun\u2019s roughly  11-year cycle. Their work still echoes through modern missions like Solar Orbiter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However you choose to spend August 12th, I hope you\u2019ll find a few minutes to observe the sun. Whether from your back garden, at a local event or simply on your way home, this is a chance to witness an astronomical event that people have watched for generations, long before any of us understood the science behind it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For those four minutes back in Texas, what stayed with me wasn\u2019t what I saw, but what I understood. We spend our lives feeling as though we\u2019re standing still, yet we\u2019re travelling through space on a moving planet, watching its moon briefly pass in front of our star. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Knowing that the same celestial event has unfolded throughout Earth\u2019s history made those few minutes unexpectedly humbling.
