Now, the renowned festival is aiming to add another layer to its legacy of cinema advocacy by commissioning new films. <\/p>\n<p>At the upcoming 64th edition, the festival will launch the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/nyff\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nyff\" data-tag=\"nyff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NYFF<\/a> Encounters initiative, which invites a director with a film in the lineup to shoot a new short film at the festival; each will premiere at the following edition. IndieWire can exclusively reveal that the inaugural film will be \u201cSouth of Tehran,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/kleber-mendonca-filho\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kleber-mendonca-filho\" data-tag=\"kleber-mendonca-filho\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho<\/a>\u2018s documentary short about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/jafar-panahi\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jafar-panahi\" data-tag=\"jafar-panahi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jafar Panahi<\/a> that was shot at NYFF in 2025.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/festivals\/tiff-2026-midnight-madness-lineup-interview-1235208706\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-card-index=\"0\" data-post-id=\"1235208706\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Vintage_Violence_HERO.jpg\" alt=\"Vintage Violence\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235208998\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/trailers\/primetime-trailer-robert-pattinson-chris-hansen-1235208849\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-card-index=\"1\" data-post-id=\"1235208849\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-06-at-9.05.03-AM.png\" alt=\"Primetime\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235209095\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The eight-minute film, which follows Panahi throughout New York as he reflects on his film career and the persecution in his native Iran that led to his current imprisonment, was filmed in a day while the two directors were in town to screen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/the-secret-agent-review-wagner-moura-brazilian-movie-1235124373\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/it-was-just-an-accident-movie-review-jafar-panahi-1235124899\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cIt Was Just an Accident,\u201d<\/a> respectively. The film takes inspiration from \u201cPier Paolo Pasolini \u2014 Agn\u00e8s Varda \u2014 New York \u2014 1967,\u201d a short film that Varda made about Pasolini during the fourth NYFF in 1967.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe New York Film Festival is, above all, a place of encounter \u2014 among filmmakers, audiences, films, and the city itself. We invite each commissioned filmmaker to capture that spirit while leaving the choice of subject and style up to them,\u201d NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim said in a statement. \u201cOur hope is that these films become lasting records of the spontaneous, stimulating moments that are central to the festival experience and, over time, form a historical archive as significant as our iconic poster collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the fact that my next film was suggested by Dennis Lim, much like a challenge,\u201d Mendon\u00e7a added. \u201cI accepted the challenge and got to shoot a little film at NYFF last year with the wonderful Jafar Panahi.
