{"id":624148,"date":"2026-08-06T20:20:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T20:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/624148\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T20:20:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T20:20:08","slug":"jack-charltons-family-face-a-tax-bill-of-up-to-e233k-to-keep-his-1966-world-cup-medal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/624148\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Charlton&#8217;s family face a tax bill of up to \u20ac233k to keep his 1966 World Cup medal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE FAMILY OF former Republic of Ireland manager Jack Charlton say they are facing a \u00a3200,000 (\u20ac233,000) inheritance tax bill if they want to keep his 1966 World Cup winner\u2019s medal within the family.<\/p>\n<p>Charlton, who died in 2020 aged 85, was part of England\u2019s World Cup-winning team that defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley in the 1966 final.<\/p>\n<p>He later became one of the most successful managers in Irish football history, leading the national side to three major international tournaments between 1986 and 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on RT\u00c9 Radio 1\u2032s Morning Ireland this morning, Charlton\u2019s son John said the issue arose while the family was dealing with his father\u2019s estate following his death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they came to the medal, the tax people here said they were looking at around \u00a3200,000 for me to get the medal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that he ultimately returned the medal to his mother, Pat, who still owns it, because transferring it into his name would trigger the tax liability. However, Charlton said the same issue will arise again in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mum has the medal and it\u2019s in a safe place.
