This is expected to result in thousands of jobs cut from its global workforce of 30,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Enterprise said it received a notification on June 22nd of \u201cproposed collective redundancies\u201d by the global drinks giant. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company employs about 1,200 people in Ireland across brewing and liqueur production, marketing, sales and commercial operations. Well-known Irish brands under its portfolio include Guinness, Bailey\u2019s, Smithwick\u2019s and the Guinness Storehouse visitor facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Diageo chief executive Dave Lewis said these measures instil \u201cconfidence that we can return Diageo to a business consistently creating value for its shareholders\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere is hard work ahead, particularly in North America,\u201d he said, \u201cbut we are confident we can deliver without taking a step back in operating profit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/07\/21\/guinness-owner-diageo-hunts-for-drinks-heavyweights-in-board-revamp\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guinness owner Diageo hunts for drinks \u2018heavyweights\u2019 in board revampOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Shares for the alcoholic beverage giant soared by 6.5 per cent on the London Stock Exchange once the news broke in advance of Lewis presenting more detailed plans to investors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company, which also owns Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker whisky, has struggled to see growth in profits amid changing consumer tastes and increasing inflation pressures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Thursday it released accounts for the 12 months up to July, which reported revenue amounting to $19.6 billion, a three per cent decrease from the 2025 financial year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The filings further show a 27 per cent decrease in the group\u2019s reported operating profit down to $3.16 billion, which it said owed to \u201cexceptional restructuring costs and impairment charges\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lewis said a \u201crevised operating framework is being rolled out across Diageo and the changes are significant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs we close out the year I would like to put on record our appreciation for all Diageo colleagues and the way they have engaged with this change programme,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/08\/06\/tax-receipts-continue-to-roll-in-as-government-tries-to-keep-a-lid-on-spending\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Multinationals paid additional \u20ac1bn in July as new 15% tax rate kicks inOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lewis, who has served as Diageo\u2019s chief executive since January, said he met shareholders on Thursday afternoon \u201cto share the progress we\u2019ve made over the past six months\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lewis declined to tell reporters in London how many jobs he expects will be cut. \u201cWhilst the impacts are big, nobody\u2019s saying to me this is the wrong thing to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe culture that Diageo wants is a winning culture.
