As the design pendulum continues to sit on the maximalist end of the spectrum, can\u2019t-miss colors and whimsy prints have never been more in demand. Some people accent these bold touches\u2014others drench\u2014but consider this your sign to embrace pattern sandwiching.<\/p>\n

Yes, you read that correctly.<\/p>\n

For years, color and pattern have seemingly been at odds. One bold element makes an impact, but wouldn\u2019t both be overwhelming? Not necessarily, say designers. The pros have found a happy medium by juxtaposing a color-drenched room with a sliver of wallpaper. (In sandwich speak: A painted trim, wainscoting, and ceiling are the proverbial bread, while a really great repeat is the design-equivalent of prosciutto or an aged-to-perfection gouda.)<\/p>\n

According to Heather French, principal and creative director of French & French Interiors<\/a> in Santa Fe, pattern sandwiching offers the best of both worlds, crafting a space that\u2019s \u201cgenuinely lived-in and warm.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s more about layering across those surfaces to create a dynamic, conversational colorway,\u201d she says. \u201cPattern sandwiching moves the eye through the room in a way that feels energizing and sets the tone for everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clara Jung\u2014founder of Banner Day<\/a> Interiors in Berkeley, California, and author of Storied Homes: Designs from Banner Day Interiors<\/a>\u2014says the pairing gives you a \u201ccurated\u201d look that ultimately gives a room \u201crhythm,\u201d not attention-grabbing saturation.<\/p>\n

Color and pattern pack on the personality\u2014and French says that\u2019s kind of the point. Since it\u2019s virtually impossible to keep up with every microtrend on social media, people are embracing their individuality in a way French hasn\u2019t seen in a long time. \u201cThey’re inspired by what’s trending, yes, but they want to make it their own,\u201d she adds. \u201cThe wallpaper-plus-paint combination unlocks endless possibilities that feel genuinely personal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bonus points: Compared to full-blown color-drenching, sandwiching is a baby step. \u201cA lot of people love the look [of color-drenching], but hesitate at the leap,\u201d explains Jung. \u201cSandwiching gives you the same sense of intention and envelopment, but with built-in breathing room.\u201d The result, she says, reads \u201cconsidered, not risky.\u201d<\/p>\n
