The red beams depict collect near-infrared imagery data from regolith (crushed rock and dust) and other surface features.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Equipped with four instruments each, the three helicopters will follow in the footsteps of the agency\u2019s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, a technology demonstrator that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/after-three-years-on-mars-nasas-ingenuity-helicopter-mission-ends\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flew 72 times over nearly three years<\/a>, proving that powered, controlled flight is possible in the rarefied Martian atmosphere. It also demonstrated how an aerial perspective can generate valuabledata by helping NASA\u2019s Perseverance Mars rover team plan time-saving routes and choose locations for science-gathering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SkyFall is expected to launch aboard NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/space-reactor-1-freedom\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space Reactor-1 Freedom<\/a>\u00a0in late 2028.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SkyFall project, which will carry three Mars helicopters to the Red Planet in December 2028, is managed by NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.\u00a0AeroVironment of Arlington, Virginia \u2014 which worked with JPL to design and build the history-making Ingenuity rotorcraft \u2014 will co-design and co-manufacture the SkyFall helicopters.
