\n\tSPOILER ALERT:<\/strong> This story discusses plot developments in \u201cSuperman<\/a>,\u201d which is now available to purchase on digital VOD.<\/p>\n

\n\tJames Gunn<\/a> provided a rare and fascinating look inside the process of making \u201cSuperman\u201d on Friday, when he posted an extended clip from the making-of documentary of the film that features an intense debate the writer-director had on set with star David Corenswet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe scene involved Superman\u2019s climactic speech to Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), after Lex screams at the last son of Krypton, \u201cYou piece of shit alien!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s where you\u2019ve always been wrong about me, Lex,\u201d Superman says back, before launching into a monologue about how all of his fallibilities and flaws make him human. While filming the speech, Gunn kept pushing Corenswet to make his performance bigger and more intense.<\/p>\n

\n\tThen, as Gunn describes in \u201cAdventures of Making Superman,\u201d \u201call of a sudden, David stops, and I\u2019m like, oh no, David\u2019s doing his thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Gunn and Corenswet both explain, the actor\u2019s theater training has led him to pepper his directors with questions. \u201cI love talking about text and what each word means and what each punctuation mark means, and I can piss people off doing that,\u201d Corenswet says. \u201cI need it to make sense. I need to know what I\u2019m trying to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat follows is something audiences almost never get to see: the star and director of a massive Hollywood production having an extended and passionate debate in front of the entire crew. At issue was Corenswet\u2019s confusion about why Superman would be so emotional while telling off Lex, after his adopted father, Pa Kent (Pruitt Taylor Vince), reassured him earlier in the film that his own choices determine who he is, not the revelation that his biological Kryptonian parents sent him to Earth to rule it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI feel weak with me yelling at him,\u201d Corenswet says on set, while Gunn is some 50 feet away watching the scene at the monitors, speaking via a microphone.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s the moment of you acknowledging your own weakness, your own hurt feelings, so that everyone that hears Superman knows that that\u2019s OK for all of us to feel that way,\u201d Gunn replies. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not OK for the Lex Luthors of the world to be telling us we shouldn\u2019t feel this way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCorenswet isn\u2019t convinced: \u201cBut, now I know that Pa Kent gave me what I need. If [Lex] says, \u2018You\u2019re an alien,\u2019 that doesn\u2019t do what it did to me before, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cExcept, I think it\u2019s not a magic bullet,\u201d Gunn says.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt this point, Corenswet comes off set and speaks to Gunn directly, still passionately \u2014\u00a0but respectfully \u2014 advocating for his point of view.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf I say, \u2019That\u2019s what it is to be human!\u2019 that feels like I\u2019m trying to prove it still, as opposed to, I really know it,\u201d the actor says, screaming the line. \u201cI felt like shit about myself since the recording came out. It\u2019s just been like, \u2018I don\u2019t belong, I\u2019m shit, everything\u2019s a lie, I\u2019m not who I thought I was.\u2019 Is this not the moment where I go, \u2018I was wrong to feel that way?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGunn, who has been listening intently, stands up and approaches Corenswet, as whoever is filming this exchange scrambles to get a good angle on their conversation. \u201cThat\u2019s where the issue is, right?\u201d he says \u201cBecause what [Pa Kent] didn\u2019t tell you was it was wrong to feel that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGunn starts jabbing his fingers into Corenswet\u2019s chest. \u201cYour feelings about feeling bad are OK,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s not wrong for you to feel that way. \u2026 And in this moment, for you to talk about how it\u2019s OK to be vulnerable, you have to be vulnerable, which means showing Lex that your fucking feelings are hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFinally, it clicks for Corenswet. He charges back onto the set and delivers the speech again, with all the hurt and vulnerability Gunn was pushing him to bring. The performance brings Gunn \u2014 and Peter Safran, the film\u2019s producer and DC Studios co-chief with Gunn \u2014\u00a0to tears.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s no anger in any of this at all,\u201d Gunn says of his exchange with Corenswet. \u201cThere\u2019s a reason why he\u2019s asking all these questions. Because it makes it better.\u201d<\/p>\n
